Megan arrived in the red bomber jacket that would later make her instantly recognizable in every video. She looked at Simone carrying a garbage liner and said nothing.

The no-contact directive had made silence compulsory. Simone welcomed it.

Rachel appeared in her denim jacket and helped fill large paper containers with popcorn. The concession table smelled strongly of butter and salt long before the movie began.

At seven, students entered. By seven-thirty nearly every chair was occupied.

Simone finally sat beside Janelle near the back. For forty minutes, she was simply another student watching a movie.

Then one of the popcorn machines jammed.

Rachel and two volunteers tried fixing it, spilling popcorn across the concession floor. Students tracked kernels along the walkway.

Holloway asked the operations team to clean before someone slipped. Simone checked the volunteer schedule.

The student assigned that time had left early because of a family emergency. Another volunteer was helping with a sound problem.

Simone sighed and stood.

Janelle offered to help. Simone told her it would take five minutes.

She found the yellow cleaning bucket near the concessions area and grabbed a broom. Kernels covered a large patch between the popcorn stand and viewing area.

Simone started sweeping.

Nobody ordered her because of her scholarship. Nobody intentionally assigned her cleaning.

That mattered.

What happened next turned an ordinary volunteer task into something else.

Megan saw her.

She had been standing near the concession table talking with Rachel.

A nearly full large paper popcorn container sat beside them. Rachel later said Megan picked it up without explaining why.

Megan walked behind Simone.

At first Simone did not notice. She was pushing a pile of kernels toward the dustpan near the yellow bucket.

Students sat only several feet away. The giant movie screen glowed behind them.

String lights hung against the evening sky.

Megan stopped directly beside Simone.

“Looks right,” she said.

Simone looked up. “What?”

Megan smiled.

“Nothing.”

Simone returned to sweeping.

Megan lifted the popcorn container.

Then she turned it upside down over Simone’s head.

Popcorn cascaded across her braids, face, shoulders, black jacket, white shirt, and the floor she had just cleaned. Kernels caught between her braids and slid inside the collar of her jacket.

Megan laughed.

Rachel laughed too.

Several students nearby gasped. A few laughed automatically before understanding what they had watched.

Simone froze with the broom still in her hand.

The empty container remained above her head for half a second before Megan lowered it.

“Oops.”

Simone looked down at the fresh pile around her shoes.

Then she looked at Megan.

“Why did you do that?”

Megan shrugged. “You’re cleaning.”

Simone stared.

“So?”

“Now you have something to clean.”

Rachel covered her mouth, smiling.

Simone leaned the broom against the yellow bucket. She slowly removed a handful of popcorn from one shoulder.

“You’re under a no-contact order.”

“I didn’t touch you.”

“You dumped food on my head.”

Megan smiled. “Technically the popcorn touched you.”

That sentence would later appear in three witness statements because several students remembered how deliberately childish it sounded.

Simone looked toward Holloway. The faculty adviser was across the courtyard dealing with projector audio.
