Nothing anyone would steal. Nothing anyone would envy. Nia held the apartment door open. You coming? Naomi swung the bag over her shoulder.

Yeah. She switched off the light and followed her sister downstairs toward the wet Richmond morning. Neither twin could know that within 3 days powerful people at Riverton would question whether they belonged there at all. And neither knew that the smallest thing Naomi carried would eventually answer that question for an entire room. By late Tuesday morning, the rain had thinned to a cold mist over Riverton Community College.

The new athletic complex rose above the older campus buildings like it had been dropped there from another world. Glass walls, pale stone, chrome railings, tall banners carrying the names of donors. The kind of place where every surface seemed polished enough to reflect back exactly who people thought they were. Naomi and Nia crossed the plaza with their coats buttoned high. Their coats were secondhand, clean, warm enough, but worn at the cuffs.

Naomi had learned long ago that some people noticed those things before they noticed your face. Nia noticed the black SUV at the curb, then the silver coupe behind it, then a man in a camelced overcoat stepping out while talking into a phone. This building looks expensive enough to charge admission just for breathing. Naomi smiled. You're being dramatic.

I'm being observant. They had 40 minutes between classes and nowhere dry nearby to eat the sandwiches Denise had packed, so they entered the athletic complex. The lobby smelled faintly of new carpet and coffee. Students moved through with gym bags, laptops, and expensive headphones. A donor wall stretched across one side, names etched in brushed metal beneath photographs of smiling men and women in formal clothes.

Naomi's eyes passed over it without stopping. She had never been impressed by walls full of names. Her father had spent most of his life doing work no wall remembered. The twins took an elevator to the second floor student lounge. A sign beside the entrance listed access for registered students, athletic program participants, guests, and approved campus volunteers.

Naomi checked it once, then walked inside. The room overlooked the main court through a sheet of glass. Soft gray chairs faced the windows. There were charging stations built into the tables and a coffee machine in the corner that charged more for one cup than Ruth's kitchen spent on a whole canister. Nia unwrapped her sandwich.

This chair alone probably has a donor. Eat. You don't think it has a plaque underneath? Naomi laughed quietly. For 10 peaceful minutes, nothing happened.

Then Ryan Whitmore entered. Jake Miller was with him. Ryan saw the twins before they saw him. Naomi noticed only when the room changed. Not dramatically, just enough.

One conversation softened. Someone glanced toward the door. Nia stopped chewing. Ryan walked over. His jacket was navy blue today, fitted perfectly at the shoulders.

He looked at the sandwiches first, then at their coats folded beside them, then at Naomi. You're in the wrong lounge. Naomi swallowed. No, we're not. Ryan smiled as if she had misunderstood a joke.

This area is for athletes and invited guests. Nia pointed to the sign outside. It says registered students, too. Ryan's smile thinned. Not really.

Naomi reached into her bag and took out her student card. She held it where he could see it. We're registered. Ryan barely looked at the card. His attention stayed on her coat.

A card can open a door. The room had gone quieter now. He gestured lazily toward the glass walls, the polished tables, the donor photographs. It doesn't mean you belong behind it. Nia set her sandwich down.

Naomi felt the shift beside her. Heat, not fear. Anger. Nia. Her sister looked at her.

Ryan heard the name and smiled. What? She needs permission to talk. No, Naomi said. She just doesn't need to waste her time.
