Ryan's own forward force carried him down. Not violently, not dramatically, just completely. His shoes lost traction on the polished concrete, and he landed flat on his side with a shocked breath. The sound echoed through the hallway. Jake's mouth opened.
Connor froze. Ryan stared up at Naomi. She had already stepped back, hands open. No follow-up strike, no anger, nothing for Jake's camera except control. "Stay down," she said.
"Nobody else needs to get hurt." Ryan's face flushed. Humiliation hit before pain did. He pushed himself up too quickly. Connor stepped in.
"Ryan, enough!" Ryan shoved Connor aside. That movement brought Connor instinctively toward Nia. Nia reacted before he could stop himself. She redirected his arm, turned his balance, and guided him into the wall with one controlled movement.
Connor caught himself with both hands. Nia immediately released him. You okay? He turned, stunned. Nia was already several feet away.
No attack, no chase, no punishment. Connor looked at her as though she had just rewritten everything he thought he understood. Jake lowered the phone half an inch. That was the first time fear appeared on his face. Not because the twins were out of control, because they were not.
That was worse. Ryan had spent days telling everyone they were aggressive. Now a camera was recording the exact opposite. He rushed Naomi again. This time, Walter shouted from the far end of the corridor, "Stop!"
Ryan hesitated. "Just enough!" Naomi did not move toward him. Walter abandoned his maintenance cart and came forward faster than his bad knee should have allowed. "What is going on?"
Ryan pointed at Naomi. "She attacked me." Walter stopped. The words hung there. Naomi looked at Jake's phone, then at Ryan.
"No. Ryan's breathing was heavy. She put me on the floor. After you shoved her, Connor said. Everyone turned. Connor swallowed.
Ryan stared at him. What did you say? Connor looked at Nia, then at Naomi. You shoved her. Jake said nothing.
Ryan stepped toward Connor. You're taking their side now. I'm saying what happened. The loading door opened behind the twins. Two catering workers entered, saw the scene, and stopped.
Then another student appeared at the kitchen end of the hall. Within moments, the corridor had become exactly what Ryan wanted all week, a crowd. Only now, the crowd was seeing the wrong story. Ryan looked around. He seemed to realize it, too.
His voice rose. They've been threatening people all week. Nobody answered. Naomi stood beside Nia. Her hands were still open.
Nia rubbed the wrist Ryan had grabbed. A bruise was already beginning to form. Naomi noticed. Something passed across her face. Pain, not for herself, for her sister.
