Lena whispered, "There it is." The technician created a preservation copy. Then another file appeared. No image at first, only voices. The camera seemed to be pointed toward Evan's jacket while the three men stood somewhere near the parking entrance.
Tyler's voice came through. Don't let her leave until she gives us something useful. Maya froze. Mason replied, "What if she just walks, then block her, and if she pushes me? Tyler laughed quietly.
Then we have what we need. The room went completely still. Maya stared at the waveform moving across the screen again. Again. She had known it.
She had understood it in the corridor. But hearing the plan spoken before she arrived was different. It turned instinct into evidence. Daniel leaned toward the technician. Save that twice.
Already doing it. Lena looked at Maya. You okay? Maya's eyes stayed on the screen. No. This time, saying it did not feel like weakness.
It felt precise. Across campus, Professor Collins sat alone in her office. The document on her screen had grown from three sentences to three pages. She had described the missing presentation file, the activity log, Tyler's repeated behavior, the forum, the hallway encounters, and her own silence. The hardest paragraph was the last one.
I believed that speaking openly could affect my department's relationship with the Witmore Foundation. Because of that fear, I failed to intervene when I had reason to believe Maya Bennett was being targeted. My silence contributed to an environment in which the harassment escalated. Professor Collins read it twice, then pressed send. The statement went to student affairs, the dean's office, and the independent investigator Riverton had appointed after the corridor incident.
Her hands shook afterward, but she did not withdraw it. In the security office downstairs, Daniel was dealing with another piece. The maintenance camera footage. Riverton's west corridor camera had no audio, but it did not need it. The video showed Mia entering alone.
Tyler blocking the exit. Mason approaching from behind. Mia attempting to move around them once, twice, three times. Mason making contact. Mia stepping back.
Mason grabbing her from behind. Only then did Mia respond physically. Daniel watched the sequence in silence. The security supervisor beside him said, "That doesn't look like an attack." Daniel answered, "No." The supervisor looked uncomfortable.
"Why wasn't this pulled immediately?" Daniel turned toward him. "That's a question somebody should answer. By noon, the evidence chain was no longer one person's word against another. It had shape, dates, files, witnesses, backups, and it kept growing.
Walter Green arrived at Ruth's kitchen carrying a folder. Ruth was waiting at a booth with Helen Morris and Leon Harris. Walter placed handwritten statements on the table. Helen had written about Maya quietly paying for her meal. Leon described the rainy evening when Mia stayed to help after his fall.
Walter wrote about the groceries, the bus stop, and the silver heron bag. Ruth added her own account of Ma's regular unpaid help. These don't prove what happened at school, Leon said. No, Walter replied. They prove who she was when nobody was filming.
Ruth looked at him. That matters. Walter nodded, especially when powerful people are trying to tell everybody who she is. By midafternoon, Mia sat in a small conference room with Denise, Lena, Daniel, and Professor Collins. It was the first time Collins had faced Mia since the suspension.
