Not louder, colder, controlled. Tyler heard it and mistook it for fear. He smiled toward Evan's camera. Come on, Maya. What are you going to do?
She looked at him. I am going to pick up my bag and leave. Mason bent as if to grab it first. Maya stepped forward. He rose quickly and put a hand against her shoulder.
She removed it. One simple motion. His wrist was redirected before he seemed to realize she had touched him. Mason stared at his own hand, then at Maya. The crowd went quiet.
Tyler's smile faded. What was that? Mia stepped back. Nothing. Mason's face hardened.
He had been embarrassed. That made him dangerous. He moved toward her again. Maya raised one open hand. Stop.
Evan's phone was still recording. Tyler glanced at it, then at Mason. Something passed between them. Maya saw it. Don't, she said.
Mason shoved her with both hands. Her back nearly touched the wall. A few people gasped. Still, nobody stepped in. Maya straightened.
Tyler spoke loudly. See, she wants this. Mia stared at him. The sentence was so calculated that for a moment, even the crowd seemed to understand, but understanding did not become action. Mia tried one final time to walk away.
Mason caught her from behind, his arm closed across her upper body. The world changed. Every sound sharpened. Rain, fluorescent buzz, someone whispering. Oh my god.
Evan moving closer with the phone. Mia's breathing slowed. Let go. Mason tightened his grip. Tyler stood several feet away, watching, waiting.
Mia looked toward the crowd. No one moved. Then Evan reached down toward the open sports bag. His fingers brushed the black belt. Maya's eyes locked on him.
Don't touch that. Evan pulled his hand back. Too late. The belt slid halfway onto the concrete. Black fabric, worn edges, years of training folded into silence.
Mason laughed behind her. What? You take karate or something? Maya closed her eyes for one second. Marcus' voice came back.
Strength is knowing what you could do and choosing what you should do. She had chosen restraint. Again. Again. Now restraint required something different.
