A bruise had already formed along her shoulder.

Damon sat in the administrative office with his father.

And outside, the first video reached social media.

BLACK PANTHER ENTERS RIDGEWOOD HIGH.

By lunchtime, fifty thousand views.

By dismissal, eight hundred thousand.

By midnight, fourteen million.

Lyanna became Panther Girl before she even got home.

Again.

She stood in her bedroom staring at her phone.

Messages poured in.

Some called her amazing.

Some called her dangerous.

Some wanted interviews.

Some demanded Shadow be destroyed.

Some claimed the video was staged.

Someone posted the address of the reserve.

Lyanna dropped the phone.

“No.”

Mara stood in the doorway.

“No.”

“We have to leave.”

“No.”

“Mom, they know.”

“I know.”

“People are coming.”

“I called the sheriff.”

“Reporters will come.”

“I know.”

“The wildlife board is going to review Shadow.”

“I know.”

“We have to go.”

Mara stepped into the room.

“No.”

Lyanna stared at her.

Mara’s voice broke.

“I have spent five years teaching you that the answer to being misunderstood is disappearing.”

Lyanna looked away.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You were.”

“For a while.”

Mara sat on the bed.

“But I also taught you that whenever people become uncomfortable, you are the one who has to lose everything.”

Lyanna’s eyes filled.

“What if they take Shadow?”

“Then we fight properly.”

“What if the school expels me?”

“Then they explain exactly what rule you violated.”

That sentence sounded almost like someone else.

Lyanna thought of Leo.

Of Mia.

Of Aaron.

Of students shouting in the hallway.

Damon pushed her.

She didn't do anything.

She is the victim.

Mara took her hand.

“We stay.”

The next morning, Ridgewood suspended both Damon and Lyanna pending investigation.

That decision lasted six hours.

Then Aaron uploaded his full video.

It began forty-seven seconds before Shadow entered.

Damon blocking Lyanna.

Damon shoving her.

Leo confronting him.

Lyanna on the floor.

Lyanna whispering “no” before the panther appeared.

The video had excellent audio.

Damon’s words were clear.

This is my hallway. My school.

So was Lyanna’s response when Shadow arrived.

Stay.

The animal obeyed.

The public conversation changed.

Not completely.

But enough.

Then Leo did something bigger.

He sent Principal Holloway a folder.

Inside were screenshots.

Dates.

Names.

Photographs.

Seven months of Damon’s bullying.

Leo had been keeping records.

Mia added emails.

Aaron added videos.

Other students began contributing.

By Friday, the folder contained forty-three incidents.

Threats.

Food taken from younger students.

Destroyed property.

Students shoved into lockers.

Racial jokes.

Homophobic comments.

Extortion for lunch money.

Threats against anyone who reported him.

Most shocking were the administrative records.

Several students had reported Damon before.

Those complaints had not disappeared.

They had been reclassified.

Peer disagreement.

Mutual conflict.

Informal resolution.

Principal Holloway stared at the reports.

She had never seen most of them.

The person who had processed them was Assistant Principal Warren Voss.

Voss also supervised athletics.

And Brent Hail, Damon’s father, had donated more than three hundred thousand dollars to Ridgewood athletics over six years.

That was the real scandal.

The panther was only what forced everyone to look.
