That afternoon, Lyanna walked home alone.

Ridgewood High sat less than two miles from the forest reserve.

Most students took buses or were picked up.

Lyanna preferred walking.

The farther she got from traffic, the easier breathing became.

Houses thinned.

Trees thickened.

Noise faded.

Halfway home, she stopped beside a narrow drainage creek.

“You can come out.”

Nothing moved.

Lyanna waited.

Then a shadow detached itself from the trees.

Black fur.

Low shoulders.

Silent paws.

Shadow stepped into the filtered afternoon light.

“You’re not supposed to follow me.”

The panther blinked slowly.

Lyanna crossed her arms.

“Mom thinks you stay in Sector Four.”

Shadow sat.

“You're going to get us both in trouble.”

His tail moved once through dead leaves.

Lyanna sighed.

Then walked closer.

She never threw her arms around him the way internet videos imagined people should behave around wild animals.

She respected what he was.

She extended one hand.

Shadow touched his head beneath it.

Only briefly.

That was enough.

“I had a bad day.”

The panther made a low chuffing sound.

Lyanna sat on a fallen log.

Shadow settled several feet away.

“He was just stupid.”

Shadow watched her.

“I’m not scared of him.”

That was a lie.

Shadow did not know English.

But he knew her.

He lifted his head.

Lyanna looked away.

“Okay. Maybe a little.”

She stayed there five minutes.

Then stood.

“Go home before Mom sees you.”

Shadow followed through the trees anyway.

That evening Mara noticed the stain on Lyanna’s backpack.

“What happened?”

“Lunch.”

“That is not an answer.”

“Someone bumped me.”

Mara studied her daughter.

Years of working with frightened animals had made her very good at noticing when someone was trying not to look frightened.

“Did somebody hurt you?”

“No.”

“Lyanna.”

“I said no.”

Mara waited.

Lyanna hated that.

Her mother never filled silence just to make it easier.

Finally Lyanna said, “Some boy thinks he owns the school.”

“Does he?”

“No.”

“Then why do you look like this?”

Lyanna dropped her backpack.

“Because I don’t want this to become something.”

Mara understood immediately.

“We are not leaving.”

“You don't know that.”

“I do.”

“What if people find out about Shadow?”

“They won’t.”

Lyanna looked toward the forest.

Mara followed her eyes.

“Has he been following you?”

Silence.

“Lyanna.”

“Sometimes.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“Sometimes means what?”

“He stays in the trees.”

“He is not supposed to leave the reserve perimeter.”

“He goes back.”

“That isn't the point.”

“He doesn't hurt anyone.”

“I know that.”

“Then why are you angry?”

“Because the world does not know that.”

Lyanna looked away.

Mara sat beside her.

“I am not angry with you.”

“You sound angry.”

“I am terrified.”

That made Lyanna look back.

Mara rarely admitted fear.

“If Shadow is seen outside the reserve, people will make decisions quickly. They won’t ask what he intended. They won’t care how gentle he is with you.”

“He's not gentle.”

“You know what I mean.”

Mara took her daughter’s hand.

“I promised you normal.”

Lyanna looked at their hands.

“I don't think normal likes me.”

Mara squeezed gently.
