For at least nine school mornings, Shadow had been leaving.

Following Lyanna toward Ridgewood.

Keeping distance.

Returning before Mara’s first feeding round.

Mara confronted her daughter.

Lyanna looked stunned.

“I didn't know.”

“He has been tracking you.”

“I never told him to.”

“I know.”

“What do we do?”

Mara looked toward the dark shape sitting beyond the glass doors.

“We reinforce the perimeter.”

Shadow watched them.

Mara whispered:

“And we hope he accepts it.”

He did not.

The next morning, the strengthened gate remained closed.

Shadow paced.

Lyanna left for school.

He paced faster.

For the first time in years, he ignored breakfast.

Mara watched him through the camera.

Something had changed.

She just did not yet know what.

At Ridgewood, Damon’s behavior escalated.

He had realized Lyanna had started building something he could not control.

People sat with her.

Leo spoke to her.

Mia invited her into conversations.

Aaron no longer moved when Damon approached.

Damon had always depended on isolation.

A person alone was easy.

A group required risk.

So he broke the group apart.

Aaron was called into the assistant principal’s office after an anonymous accusation that he had been vaping behind the gym.

He had not.

Mia’s mother received an email claiming Mia had been involved in repeated cafeteria disruptions.

She had not.

Leo’s robotics club found its storage cabinet forced open and several components missing.

Nobody could prove Damon had anything to do with any of it.

But Leo said what everyone was thinking.

“He’s trying to make us back off.”

Lyanna went pale.

“Then back off.”

Leo stared.

“What?”

“Stop sitting with me.”

“No.”

“Leo.”

“No.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

“I can't.”

“Exactly.”

Leo lowered his voice.

“You keep acting like the only way to protect people is to disappear.”

Lyanna froze.

He had accidentally reached something deep.

“I know people like that,” he continued. “My older sister used to do it. She thought if she never needed anyone, nobody could get hurt because of her.”

Lyanna looked at him.

“What happened?”

“She got lonely.”

That simple answer landed harder than anything dramatic would have.

Lyanna looked down.

Leo nudged her shoulder.

“I'm staying.”

Mia said, “Me too.”

Aaron leaned across the table.

“I don't even like you people that much, but now I’m committed.”

Lyanna laughed.

It was the first time any of them had heard it.

Damon heard it too.

Across the cafeteria.

His face changed.

The following Monday began warm and bright.

By second period, the temperature outside was already eighty degrees.

Ridgewood’s side doors near the athletic field had been propped open because maintenance workers were moving equipment between buildings.

Nobody thought about it.

At 10:42, Lyanna left English class to refill her water bottle.

She took the hallway near the gym because it was quieter.

Damon stepped from around the corner.

Alone.

For once, no friends.

That made her more nervous.

“You've been talking about me.”

“No.”

“Mia’s been talking.”

“I don't control Mia.”

“You should.”

Lyanna moved left.

Damon blocked her.

“Move.”

He smiled.

“There she is.”

“Move.”

“You think because those losers sit with you now, you can disrespect me?”
