He'd shown up to his first day in a clean black suit because that was who he was. You dress for the standard you're holding yourself to, not the standard other people are holding you to. The fleet supervisor had looked him up and down and said, "You know you're driving, right? Not presenting to the board. "Yes, sir."

Marcus said. "I know what I'm doing." He drove. He was professional. He was punctual.

He was invisible in the exact way the job required. And he was fine with that because invisible meant Amara ate dinner every night. Invisible meant her school fees didn't fall behind. Invisible meant Marcus Bennett kept his word to the only person on Earth he absolutely could not let down. He'd been driving for Whitmore Technologies for 4 months when he got assigned to the CEO rotation.

He'd heard things about Claire Whitmore, the way you hear things about anyone who moves at that altitude. Brilliant. Cold. Demanding. Built the company from a Series A raise and a presentation deck into a $1.4 billion operation in 11 years.

Divorced 14 months ago. No children. No visible personal life. The kind of woman who answered emails at midnight and scheduled Sunday calls with international partners because the weekend was just more time to work. Marcus had no opinion about any of that.

He didn't trade in opinions about people he hadn't met. That was another thing Baltimore had taught him. A reputation is a story other people tell. Wait until you see for yourself. The first 3 weeks, Claire Whitmore barely acknowledged he was alive.

She got in the car, opened her laptop and worked. She exited the car, offered a perfunctory thank you, and disappeared into buildings. Clean. Professional. Efficient.

Marcus drove, said nothing unless spoken to, kept the car at exactly the right temperature, kept the route smooth, did the job. Then came the Wednesday she had a 7:00 a. m. board call that ran until noon. A partner lunch that ended in a disagreement he could tell was serious from the set of her shoulders when she came back to the car. And a product launch event in the evening that stretched 3 hours past its scheduled end. By the time Marcus pulled up to the venue exit at 11:00 p. m. he'd been working a 16-hour day.

He got out, opened the rear door, and Claire Whitmore walked out of the building one and stopped when she saw him standing there. "You've been here since this morning." She said. It wasn't a question. "Yes, ma'am."

She looked at him for a moment, actually looked, which was different from how she usually looked in his direction. "Have you eaten?" He paused. "I'm fine, Ms. Whitmore."
