"I'll be at your building in 40 minutes." He was there in 35. She met him in the lobby, which was strange. She never met anyone in the lobby, and they rode the elevator up in a silence that was nothing like the silences of those first months in the car. Those silences had been professional distance.

This one was two people who understood each other standing on the edge of something serious together. In the apartment, Marcus sat across from her at the kitchen table. He had a folder, printed documents highlighted with handwritten notes in the margins in his small, precise handwriting. He laid it out in front of her and spent 12 minutes walking her through exactly what he had found. Claire did not interrupt him once.

She read what he showed her. She followed the thread he'd pulled the board members, the competing group, the financial ties, the timeline, the failed bid six months ago. She sat very still and she read, and when he finished, she looked up at him. "How long did it take you to find this?" she asked.

"About five hours. Five hours." She said it like she was turning it over. "Our compliance team has $2 million in tools and 14 people. Your compliance team wasn't looking for this," Marcus said.

"Because nobody told them to look for it. Because the people who should have flagged it were the same people generating it." Claire pressed her palms flat on the table. She looked at the documents. She looked at Marcus.

"This is enough," she said. "If we can verify the financial connections, if we can get independent confirmation of the conflict of interest, this is enough to remove Kelner and potentially Hartwell from the board entirely." "Yes," Marcus said. "But you have to move before Monday. Because if you walk into that session without this, they control the frame, and once they control the frame, I know how it works," she said quietly.

"I know." She was quiet for a moment. Then she looked at him with something he had not seen on her face before in all the months he'd known her. Not the CEO, not the professional, something underneath all of it direct and human and real. "Marcus, I need to ask you something, and I need you to answer me honestly."

"Always," he said. "Why are you doing this?" she asked. "They offered you a clean exit. A voluntary transition. that means they'd have given you a good reference.

A severance package, a soft landing. You could have walked away from this entire situation and rebuilt from a stronger position. Why didn't you take it? Marcus was quiet for a moment. Not evasive thinking, the way he always thought.

All the way to the bottom before he opened his mouth. "Because it was the wrong thing to do." He said simply. "And because I've already done the version of my life where I stay quiet about wrong things and pay the price for it. I don't do that version anymore."
