She gathered her things. At the rear, she paused, hand on the handle, back straight. Every line of her, the CEO she had built herself to be, and she looked at him one more time in the mirror. "Marcus." "Yeah."

"After today, however today goes, I want to talk about some things." He held her gaze in the mirror. "Yeah," he said, "so do I." She nodded, got out. Walked through the glass doors without looking back.

Marcus pulled away from the curb. He drove two blocks, pulled into a parking structure, and sat there. He thought about Arthur Kelner in that boardroom, recalibrating, about Claire walking in with documented proof in a closed deal, and the absolute authority of someone who has done the right thing at every step. About what Kelner would try, and how she would handle it, and whether it would be enough. He thought about Amara asking if they could make biscuits, about the first ones never being very good, and the next ones being better.

He thought about the rainy night in a parking garage that had started all of this. A broken car, a ride home, a quiet request from a woman who had everything and was completely alone. He thought about how long it had taken him to understand that the thing he'd walked away from the falsified report, the clean exit Kelner had offered, every version of the easy choice that would have cost him something he couldn't afford to lose, had not actually cost him anything real. The things it had taken, he'd rebuilt. The thing it had saved, he'd kept.

37 minutes later, his phone buzzed. A text from an unsaved number that turned out to be Kelner's assistant, which meant it was actually from Kelner, which meant he was already trying to go around Claire and apply pressure wherever he could find it. The message was brief and careful and asked whether Marcus had given any further thought to a transition arrangement. Marcus looked at the message for a long time. Then he put the phone face down on the seat and waited.

Because inside that building Claire Whitmore was doing what she did. And she didn't need him in there to do it. She needed him to be who he was out here. Steady, holding the line, the same way he'd been holding lines his whole life at personal cost that most people would have decided wasn't worth it. The cost was always worth it.

That was the thing nobody told you. The cost of integrity looks enormous from the outside and feels like almost nothing from the inside. Because what you're paying it with is the thing you can't actually afford to spend. His phone buzzed again. This time it was a number he recognized.

Dale, you hear anything? Not yet, Marcus said. Whatever's happening in there, Dale paused. Just so you know, half the fleet team's pulling for you. Probably more.

Marcus was quiet for a moment. Tell them I appreciate that I will. A pause. How you doing? For real.

Marcus thought about it. I'm good, he said. Yeah, Dale said. Yeah, somehow I believe that. The call ended.
