I told myself I was working. That I couldn't leave the counter. That Maya shook her head because she didn't want help. Her eyes filled. But I still let her kneel there alone.
Nobody moved. Lisa looked directly at Maya. I'm sorry. Maya's eyes burned. She blinked hard.
Lisa turned back to Daniel. So don't you stand here and call what happened today mutual. I watched that girl absorb more disrespect than most people in this room would tolerate for 30 seconds. Karen looked away. Walter did not.
He kept his eyes on her. And what about your meeting with Maya? Karen stiffened. What about it? Maya's pulse shifted.
Walter said. You warned her that her scholarship gave her more to lose. Karen's face hardened. That was a private advisory conversation. Erin's head came up.
Maya looked toward him. His expression changed. I recorded part of that too. Karen stared at him. What?
Erin looked uncomfortable. I was outside Foster Hall that day. I was waiting for an appointment. Maya remembered the photograph Brooke had sent. Maya leaving Karen's office.
Her stomach tightened. Erin continued. I heard voices through the open doorway when Ms. Carter was leaving. He unlocked his phone. Karen stepped forward.
You cannot use private audio obtained without consent. Walter raised a hand. Nobody is making a legal determination in this cafeteria. Daniel nodded. But it may still be relevant to an internal review.
Karen went still. Erin played the recording. It was faint. But understandable. Maya's voice.
Even if someone else starts it. Then Karen. "Every case is evaluated individually." A pause. Then Maya.
"So the rules are different for me." Karen's response followed. "The rules are the same for everyone." Then several seconds later. "Your scholarship gives you more to lose."
The audio ended. No one spoke. Maya watched Karen. For the first time the conduct coordinator did not look powerful. She looked exposed.
Brooke stepped backward. This is insane. Walter turned toward her. No. His voice was quiet.
This is what happens when everybody finally stops editing the truth. Daniel's radio crackled. A security supervisor's voice came through. We've reviewed the archived cafeteria footage from last week. It confirms the earlier incident involving Ms. Whitman and Ms. Carter.
Brooke froze. Daniel answered. Copy. Maya looked up. Last week.
The tray. The notebook. The silence. Now preserved. Daniel faced Maya.
His expression had changed. Ms. Carter. She waited. I should not have ordered you against the wall before asking what happened. The apology was stiff, institutional, but it was an apology.
Maya nodded once. Thank you. Daniel looked toward Brooke and Evan. Neither of you are leaving until statements are taken. Evan opened his mouth.
Daniel stopped him. That wasn't a request. Brooke's face reddened. You know who my father is? Walter closed his eyes briefly.
There it was. The sentence the entire story had been moving toward. Daniel looked at her. Yes. Brooke almost smiled.
