For the first time since she had built her company from a single struggling division into a name printed on the tallest buildings in three cities, Celeste Whitmore became the one doing the pursuing, and she discovered almost immediately how little practice she had at it. She invited Malcolm to dinner under the pretense of discussing project logistics, then found herself asking almost nothing about the project at all. She asked him to accompany her to a fundraising gala the following month. And when he hesitated, she pretended the invitation had been purely professional, though both of them understood it had not been. She began arranging her schedule so that her path crossed his more often than the project required, sitting beside him during site reviews, where her presence was not strictly necessary, asking questions about his life that had nothing to do with blueprints or budgets.

Malcolm answered when she asked, "But he never volunteered more than the question required, and he never once closed the distance between them himself. It was not." Celeste came to understand, because he was unmoved by her. She had spent enough years reading rooms to recognize the particular quality of attention a man gives a woman he is trying not to want. the careful way he avoided her eyes a beat too long. The way his voice dropped half a register when he spoke to her directly. What held him back was something more deliberate than attraction, and it took a direct conversation late one evening in the half emptied Bell Haven offices for her to understand what it was.

She asked him bluntly whether he was afraid of her. "No," he said. "Then what are you afraid of?" she pressed. He was quiet long enough that she thought he might not answer at all. I am afraid of the day you stopped needing me, he finally said.

Celeste had not expected that answer, and it landed somewhere she had not braced for. Malcolm continued, his voice steady but quieter than before. I do not want to become an amusement in the life of a billionaire, he told her. Something you keep around until you grow tired of the novelty of a man who does not chase you. The words cut cleanly because they were true in a way Celeste had not allowed herself to examine.

And for a moment neither of them spoke. "I do not want to play games with you," she finally said, surprising herself with the honesty of it. "Then what do you want?" Malcolm asked. And Celeste, who had spent her entire adult life having an answer prepared for every question anyone had ever asked her, found that she had none. The silence stretched between them, heavy and unresolved, and Malcolm did not push her to fill it.
