I do not know, he admitted, and the honesty of it surprised her more than any confident answer could have. But I know how to love a woman without turning her into something I own, he said. Celeste smiled, and something in her finally settled into a stillness she had not felt in longer than she could remember. That is the answer I wanted to hear, she told him. They agreed without needing to formalize it the way Celeste formalized every other decision in her life that whatever they built together would carry none of the architecture either of them had spent their careers constructing.

No contracts between them. No leverage of money or position. No agreement dressed up as affection because it served either of their interests. Just two adults each shaped by years of disappointment and quiet endurance choosing each other without a single condition attached. There would be no press release, no curated photograph released to soften public curiosity, no strategic framing designed to protect either of their reputations.

For the first time in her adult life, Celeste found herself relieved by the absence of a narrative to manage content, to let something exist simply because it was true rather than because it served a purpose beyond itself. Malcolm reached down and unfassened the old watch he wore, the same worn leather band Celeste had noticed the very first night she met him, and held it out toward her, turning it slightly in the terrace light so she could see the scratched glass and the faded numbers on its face. "It is not worth much," he said. Celeste took it from his hand and turned it over once before looking back up at him. "I do not need something valuable," she told him.

I need something real. She took his hand instead of the watch, holding it the way she had never allowed herself to hold anything she could not control. And the two of them stood together at the edge of the terrace, while the lights of Manhattan burned on below them, indifferent and endless, the same as they had been the night this all began, and the same as they would be long after either of them stopped needing the city to notice them at all. A man once measured only by the money he did not have had become in the end the one thing a billionaire could never buy and the one thing she had never known until him that she was still capable of wanting.
