He simply looked at her. The way a man looks at whether he has already decided not to run from, and he set his own glass down on the table beside him with unhurrieded care. I am better at making a woman feel seen than I am at anything that happens after the lights go out, he said. Celeste laughed short and sharp, the laugh she used when she needed a second to recover. But something in his voice had not been a joke, and the laugh died in her throat before it finished.

He held her gaze one moment longer, inclined his head with the smallest courtesy, and walked away, leaving her standing alone by the window with a glass she no longer wanted to drink. For the first time in years, Celeste Whitmore did not know what to say next. And worse, she did not know why that silence felt like the most interesting thing that had happened to her in a decade. She told herself it meant nothing. Men who did not chase her were rare, but they were not unheard of. and she had learned long ago that indifference was often just another kind of performance, a slower seduction dressed up as disinterest.

So she watched him for the rest of the evening from across the room, cataloging him the way she cataloged everything for weaknesses, for leverage, for the version of him that would eventually want something from her the way everyone eventually did. He spoke to no one for long. He drank water instead of wine after the first glass. He left before midnight without saying goodbye to anyone who mattered in that room, which was Celeste realized with some irritation, the first time she had watched a man leave a party like that one without trying to be remembered. She went home that night and did not sleep well, which annoyed her more than the man himself ever could have.

By morning, she had already pulled his file. Malcolm Veyron, 58 years old, contracted as a technical adviser on the Bell Haven redevelopment project, one of the largest real estate ventures Whitmore Meridian had undertaken in a decade. His record was almost aggressively ordinary. A former lead engineer at a midsized infrastructure firm, no luxury property, no flashy vehicle registered to his name, no public social profile worth mentioning. He had stepped back from senior management years earlier following what the file vaguely called a personal restructuring.

And since then he had taken smaller contracts, always technical, always behind the scenes, never in front of a camera or a boardroom audience. It read like the biography of a man who had deliberately made himself forgettable. And that more than anything else was what caught Celeste's attention because in her experience men who wanted nothing were either saints or liars and she had never once in 42 years met a saint. There was one detail that refused to sit quietly in the file. Malcolm had turned down consulting offers from three separate fortune tier corporations in the past 5 years.
