Brennan looked at Evelyn sharply.

Now that consequences existed, responsibility had already begun moving.

“I never told him to arrest you.”

A man filming near the shoe section raised his phone slightly.

“You absolutely told him to.”

Evelyn turned.

“Stay out of this.”

The man shook his head.

“No.”

Camille lifted one hand.

“That’s enough.”

Everyone stopped.

She looked at Evelyn.

“You need to leave.”

Evelyn blinked.

“You’re removing me from a store I’ve supported for eleven years?”

“For today.”

“You cannot punish a customer for reporting something suspicious.”

Camille’s voice remained level.

“I am asking you to leave because you followed another shopper, interfered with her purchases, made an unsupported accusation, continued escalating after employees confirmed nothing was missing, and urged police action when you had not witnessed a theft.”

Evelyn stared.

Then her voice softened.

“This is humiliating.”

Camille held her gaze.

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked stunned.

Camille continued.

“Now imagine nobody comes downstairs to tell everyone you’re important.”

That ended the argument.

Evelyn picked up her handbag.

She walked toward the doors.

Before leaving, she turned toward Martin and said, “You let this happen.”

Martin stared at her.

Camille almost laughed.

Everybody wanted someone else to own the moment.

The doors closed.

The First Question After the Reveal

Brennan asked to take Camille’s formal statement. She agreed, but she insisted they move upstairs to a conference room where the crowd could return to shopping. Julian followed but sat at the far end of the table, leaving the conversation between Camille and the officer.

Brennan opened his notebook.

“Start from when you entered.”

Camille explained the unannounced inspection, the security-camera review, the dresses, Evelyn’s approach, Martin’s hesitation, and the police call. She described everything without embellishing what she could not know about Evelyn’s thoughts.

When she finished, Brennan looked down at his notes.

“I want to clarify something.”

“Go ahead.”

“When I arrived, dispatch had coded it as suspected shoplifting.”

“Based on whose report?”

“The caller.”

“Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

Camille asked whether any Vale Rowe employee had told him merchandise was missing.

“No.”

“Did you ask?”

Brennan paused.

“I asked if the dresses had been paid for.”

Camille nodded.

“That is a different question.”

He looked at his notes.

“Yes.”

“Did you ask whether I concealed merchandise?”

“No.”

“Did you ask whether I crossed a final point of sale?”

“No.”

“Whether security had observed a theft?”

“No.”

Brennan sat quietly.

Then he said, “I started with the assumption that the call probably represented an actual theft.”
