Supervisor bars now marked his uniform.

“Officer Brennan.”

“Lieutenant now.”

“Congratulations.”

He smiled awkwardly.

“I’ve wanted to tell you something.”

Camille waited.

“I use that body-camera footage in training.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“With department permission.”

“Important clarification.”

He laughed.

Then his expression became serious.

“I stop the clip right before I mentioned detention.”

“What do you ask recruits?”

“What offense I had actually established.”

“And?”

“Usually they say none.”

Camille nodded.

Brennan looked toward the security checkpoint.

“I thought the fact that dispatch sent me to a shoplifting call meant there was probably a shoplifter.”

“That’s understandable.”

“It isn’t sufficient.”

“No.”

He paused.

“I was angry with you afterward.”

Camille almost laughed.

“With me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You made me feel stupid.”

He raised one hand.

“I know how that sounds.”

Camille waited.

“I told myself you embarrassed me by challenging everything I said.”

He looked at her.

“Eventually I figured out I was embarrassed because I couldn’t answer your questions.”

Camille nodded.

“That’s different.”

“Yes.”

They stood quietly.

Then Brennan apologized.

No camera.

No investigation.

No audience.

No professional advantage.

Camille accepted it.

They shook hands.

Then walked in different directions.

Not friends.

That was fine.

Not every conflict needed friendship to end honestly.

Before They Knew Her Name

At sixty-two, Camille eventually wrote a memoir.

Her editor insisted the boutique incident needed an entire chapter.

Camille resisted.

“It’s been overused.”

“That’s why people will recognize it.”

“I hate publishing already.”

“You signed a contract.”

The editor proposed a chapter title.

The Day She Called Police on the Wrong Woman.

Camille threatened to remove the entire section.

Eventually she named it:

Before They Knew My Name.
