Nia appeared beside him. “We should go somewhere.” Darius looked at her. “Where?”

“Anywhere.” She smiled. “That is the point.”

They went to Piedmont Park. Vanessa joined them after lunch. Nothing important happened.

Nia rode a scooter. Darius bought coffee. Vanessa sat beneath a tree reading.

For Darius, it was one of the most extraordinary afternoons of his life precisely because nobody needed anything from him. No system was failing. No paperwork waited.

No one required saving. They simply existed together.

Vanessa’s company improved too. The investigation into Stephen and Gregory forced Hartwell Global to examine how promotions, compensation reviews, and internal credit actually worked. Several employees discovered they had been performing responsibilities above their formal classification for years.

Vanessa ordered a company-wide role audit. She refused to call it the Coleman review. Darius appreciated that.

“People deserve correct pay even if I never meet them.” Vanessa said during one leadership meeting. Darius looked toward her. She knew exactly where the sentence came from.

Gregory remained CFO for another year. His relationship with Darius never became warm. It became professional.

That was enough. Respect did not always need friendship. Sometimes fairness was the successful outcome.

Evan eventually became Vanessa’s chief of staff. His anxiety never disappeared, but it became more productive. He continued sending exact quotes.

Darius once asked why. Evan answered, “Because interpretation is where careers go to die.”

Darius laughed. “That might be the smartest thing you have ever said.” Evan looked offended. “I have said many smart things.”

Nia turned nine. Vanessa attended the birthday party. She helped decorate cupcakes while pretending she did not know how.

Nia corrected her technique. Vanessa accepted coaching with more grace than most board members. Darius watched them and felt something in his chest settle.

One evening, months after the first paperwork delivery, Darius and Vanessa sat in her kitchen after Nia fell asleep upstairs. The same espresso machine stood behind them. The same island separated nothing anymore.

Vanessa looked toward him. “Do you remember what you said the first night?”

Darius smiled. “I have made many brilliant statements.”

“The proposal.” Vanessa rolled her eyes. “The terrible one.”

Darius leaned back. “Vaguely.”

“You said marrying you would save the commute.” Darius nodded solemnly. “Financially responsible.”

Vanessa looked at him for several seconds. “You realize I said yes.”

“You were drinking wine.” Vanessa shook her head. “I knew exactly what I said.”
