“This is my fault.” Vanessa looked back toward the city. “I promoted you too quickly.”
Darius said nothing. “I invited you to lunch.”
“People saw us.” Vanessa’s voice tightened. “I should have anticipated what it could cost you.”
Darius moved toward the desk. “Look at me.” Vanessa did.
“Do you believe the rumor?” Her expression hardened. “Absolutely not.”
“Do I?” Vanessa answered, “No.”
“Then the problem is people without facts.” Darius sat down. “Give them facts.”
Vanessa stared at him. “It is more complicated.”
“Only if we make it complicated.” Darius leaned forward. “My work is documented.”
“Your promotion process is documented.” He paused. “Nothing improper happened.”
Vanessa exhaled. “Stephen said multiple people had raised concerns about our relationship and the integrity of the promotion.”
“Who told the board?” Vanessa shook her head. “He implied he might.”
Darius became quiet. He thought about Stephen’s process objection and Gregory’s language about optics. Something aligned.
“He is building a case.” Vanessa looked at him. “Against whom?”
“You.” Darius answered. “Possibly me, but mostly you.”
Vanessa’s face changed. Darius continued. “If your judgment becomes questionable, Stephen becomes the executive who responsibly raised the concern.”
“He gets political capital.” Vanessa sat down slowly. “Gregory?”
“I don’t know yet.” Darius paused. “But his concern started before the rumor.”
Vanessa looked at him differently. “You have thought about this.” Darius gave a humorless smile.
“Men who look like me do not get to avoid thinking about why someone suddenly wants more process around our success.” Vanessa absorbed that. “What do you want to do?”
“Document everything.” Darius stood. “Let confident people keep talking.”
Vanessa nodded. “Legal?” Darius answered, “Immediately.”
