Jack leaned back in his chair, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. He looked at the system diagnostics, core temperatures dropping, database connections reestablishing. He turned around. The expensive engineers were staring at him with their mouths open. They had spent 12 hours trying to break a lock that Jack had just dismantled in 4 minutes.

Evelyn Cross stood a few feet away, her arms crossed over her trench coat. She looked at the blue lights. She looked at the readouts on her tablet which were suddenly flooding with notifications of systems coming back online. She looked at Jack. Status?

She asked. The patch is quarantined, Jack said, spinning his chair around. The main frames are cooling. Client databases will be fully accessible in roughly 8 minutes once the DNS reroutes finish. Evelyn nodded slowly.

The crisis was over. The bleeding had stopped. She walked past the stunned engineers stepping up to the console. She looked at the raw code still lingering on the secondary monitors. She wasn't a programmer, but she understood efficiency.

She understood architecture. You built this entire infrastructure yourself, she asked quietly, so only Jack could hear. From scratch, Jack confirmed. Before the buyout, before management decided they wanted cheaper labor and shinier dashboards. It's brilliant, Evelyn said, an objective statement of fact and entirely wasted in a basement.

She turned to face the room, her eyes locked onto the lead engineer who had failed to fix the problem all night. Clear out your desks, Evelyn commanded the room at large. All of you, you report to Mr. Thornton now. If he tells you to jump, you ask how high. If he tells you to rewrite your code, you don't sleep until it's done.

Am I understood? The engineers nodded frantically, too terrified to speak. Jack stood up. He walked over to where Khloe was standing by the security guard. He picked her up, ignoring the ache in his back, and settled her on his hip.

"Can we get pizza now, Dad?" Khloe whispered, leaning her head on his shoulder. Jack looked at Evelyn Cross. He looked at the servers that he now controlled. He felt the heavy, suffocating weight of the past 5 years lift off his chest, replaced by the terrifying, exhilarating rush of control.

"Yeah, bug," Jack said, a genuine smile finally breaking across his tired face. "We can get all the pizza you want." They took the executive elevator up. It wasn't dead anymore. The power was flowing, the digital floor indicator ticking upward in a smooth, silent ascent.

Floor 12. Floor 30. Floor 45. Jack stood in the back of the spacious cab. Khloe still resting on his hip.

She was yawning, the excitement of the big cars and the loud noises fading into a midm morning crash. Evelyn Cross stood by the doors, her posture rigid, her eyes focused on the scrolling numbers. She was already transitioning from the crisis in the basement to the bloodletting that was about to happen in the boardroom. The elevator chimed at floor 50. The doors parted.
