“Never.”

“What is in the archive?”

Richard answered reluctantly.

“Board recordings. Original acquisitions. Security archives. Historical vendor files. Before everything went digital, we duplicated sensitive material to an isolated server.”

“Location?”

Richard hesitated.

Victoria said, “Dad.”

“A research facility outside the city.”

Daniel knew immediately.

The place in the photograph.

Where Richard and Daniel had worked together fifteen years earlier.

Victor spoke.

“Midnight.”

Frank’s eyes narrowed.

Victor continued.

“Bring the archive access key.”

“To whom?” Daniel asked.

“To the facility.”

“And then?”

“You learn what happened to Helen Mercer.”

The call ended.

Frank immediately stood.

“This is a trap.”

Daniel said, “Obviously.”

“We don’t go.”

“We absolutely go.”

“Daniel.”

“Helen helped me. Then she disappeared because of what we found.”

“You don't know she's alive.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“But I’m done leaving people behind because I’m afraid.”

Victoria studied him.

The sentence was not only about Helen.

It was about Sarah.

His unborn child.

His career.

Fifteen years of silence.

Frank began assembling federal contacts.

Richard supplied the archive key.

Victoria refused to stay behind.

Daniel told her no.

She stared at him.

“You don’t get to decide that for me.”

“Your presence creates risk.”

“My company created this.”

“Your father’s company.”

“I run it now.”

Daniel almost said something cruel.

He stopped.

Victoria continued.

“You told me at the restaurant you wouldn’t accept disrespect just because of who I am. Fine. Then don’t protect me like I’m incapable just because you know more than I do.”

Daniel held her gaze.

For the first time, she was not the woman at the restaurant.

No diamonds.

No superiority.

No performance.

Just someone choosing where to stand.

“All right,” he said.

Richard started to speak.

Daniel cut him off.

“You stay.”

Richard looked offended.

“You just let her go.”

“She can run faster.”

Victoria almost smiled.

Richard did not.

The research facility had been abandoned for nine years.

Sterling Global still owned the property, but the laboratories were empty.

At 11:42 p.m., Daniel, Victoria, and Frank approached in separate vehicles while federal tactical teams staged beyond the property line.

The plan was simple.

Simple plans survive better.

Richard’s archive key was copied.

The real one remained with Frank’s team.

Daniel carried a duplicate.

Victoria wore a transmitter beneath her jacket.

At 11:58, lights came on inside the main building.

One row at a time.

Exactly the way Daniel remembered.

He stopped walking.

For one second he was thirty again.

Sarah was alive.

Lily did not exist yet.

His whole future was still unbroken.

Victoria noticed.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He kept walking.

They entered.

Victor stood in the central laboratory.

Fifteen years had changed him.

Thinner.

Gray hair.

A scar along one cheek.

But the smile was the same.

Martin Keene stood ten feet behind him.

And beside Martin—

A woman.

Late fifties.

White hair cut short.

Thin.

Alive.

Daniel stopped.

“Helen.”

Helen Mercer looked at him.

Her eyes filled.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Everything else disappeared.

Fifteen years.

Questions.

Guilt.

“Where have you been?”
