“And you?”

Victoria looked at him.

“I trusted status more than character.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That’ll do it.”

She almost smiled.

“I am sorry.”

This time Daniel believed her.

Not because she sounded more emotional.

Because she did not ask him to forgive her.

“Thank you,” he said.

She looked surprised.

“That’s it?”

“What were you expecting?”

“I don't know.”

“People always make apologies harder than they need to be.”

She looked toward Lily.

“Dinner?”

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“That was smooth.”

“I’m learning.”

“Is this another emergency-repair meeting?”

“No.”

“Business?”

“No.”

“Do I deserve a chair this time?”

Victoria actually flinched.

Daniel smiled for the first time.

“I’m joking.”

“I deserved that.”

“Yes.”

Dinner became Friday dinners.

Not every Friday.

Enough.

Richard came once.

He stood outside Carter Auto Repair for almost five minutes before entering.

Daniel watched through the office window.

Finally Richard came inside.

Lily was painting part of her bridge.

She looked up.

“Are you the billionaire?”

Richard blinked.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Lily.”

“What? Ms. Sterling said her dad was really rich.”

Richard laughed.

A genuine laugh.

“Yes.”

Lily considered him.

“Do you know engineering?”

“Some.”

“Dad says rich people usually know less than they think.”

Daniel looked at the ceiling.

Richard laughed harder.

“Your father is correct.”

That broke something between them.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something.

Later, Richard and Daniel stood outside beside the shop.

Cars moved along the street.

Richard said, “I never apologized for offering you money.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You were afraid.”

“That doesn't excuse it.”

“No.”

“I thought if I could make you quiet, I could control the damage.”

“You sound like Victoria.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“She gets it honestly.”

Then his expression changed.

“I’m sorry about Sarah.”

Daniel stared at the road.

That apology was harder.

Richard continued.

“If I had known—”

Daniel interrupted.

“You didn’t.”

“I should have.”

“Yes.”

They stood in silence.

Richard asked, “Can you ever forgive me?”

Daniel thought for a long time.

“No.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“But that doesn't mean I hate you.”

Richard looked at him.

“It means some things don't get repaired. You learn how to live beside the damage.”

Richard nodded.

Daniel looked toward the shop window where Lily was arguing with Victoria about bridge supports.

“And sometimes you build something else.”

Two years passed.

Sterling Global survived.

Smaller.

More transparent.

Less dominated by the Sterling family.

Victoria remained CEO.

The company established mandatory independent engineering reviews for major infrastructure projects.

No emergency system could be modified without third-party certification.

Whistleblower reports went outside management.

Richard funded a protection program for employees who exposed corporate wrongdoing.

He named it after Helen Mercer.

Helen hated the attention.

She accepted anyway.

Daniel stayed at the garage.

Carter Auto Repair expanded.

He hired three more mechanics.

Then an apprentice program.

Young people who were good with their hands but had been told that intelligence only counted if it happened in an office.

Daniel disagreed.

Lily entered the engineering competition.

She won second place.
