The entire restaurant fell silent when Victoria Sterling pointed at the empty chair across from her and said, “You don’t deserve to sit with me.” Daniel Carter stood beside the table in his faded navy work shirt, his hands still marked with grease from a long day at the garage. Across the room, wealthy businessmen exchanged amused glances. Victoria’s diamond earrings glittered beneath the chandeliers, and her expression made it clear that she considered him an embarrassment.
Daniel looked at the chair, then at the elegant woman. “I wasn’t planning to stay,” he replied calmly. “I only came because your assistant said you wanted to discuss the emergency repairs at your company’s headquarters.” Victoria laughed coldly. “Please, you’re a mechanic.”
“My company has engineers who earn more in a month than you earn in a year. Don’t confuse a repair job with an invitation into my world.” Daniel nodded, picked up the folder he had brought, and turned toward the exit. “Then you won’t mind if I leave.” Something about his calm response irritated Victoria more than an argument would have.
People usually begged for her attention. Men twice her age changed their schedules to impress her. Yet this single father seemed completely uninterested in winning her approval. “Wait,” she called. “Do you even know who I am?”
Daniel stopped. “Victoria Sterling, CEO of Sterling Global. Your company’s name is on nearly every building in this district.” Victoria stared at him. “And you still walk away from me?”
“I know who you are,” Daniel said. “That doesn’t mean I have to accept disrespect from you.” Then he left. Victoria watched him disappear through the glass doors, her pride wounded in front of everyone. She had no idea that the man she had just insulted was the one person her father had spent 15 years hoping never to encounter again.
Three hours earlier, Daniel had been preparing to close Carter Auto Repair when his 10-year-old daughter, Lily, appeared in the office doorway holding her school project. “Dad, can you help me finish this before tomorrow?” Daniel smiled despite his exhaustion. “Of course, sweetheart. Give me 10 minutes to clean up.” Since his wife had died, Lily had become the center of his world.
He worked long hours, repaired old cars, and refused to complain about the sacrifices required to raise her alone. He had once possessed a very different life, but he had buried that chapter after a tragedy that changed everything. Then the call from Sterling Global arrived. Their headquarters had suffered a critical mechanical failure in its underground emergency power system. Several contractors had failed to identify the cause, and the company’s board was preparing to shut down an important data center.
Daniel examined the system and discovered a dangerous design flaw hidden behind a series of expensive upgrades. “This wasn’t caused by ordinary wear,” he told the facilities director. “Someone approved equipment that should never have been connected this way.” The director stared at him. “Can you fix it?”
