The officer noticed the red liquid covering her and initially asked whether she was bleeding. Aaliyah explained that it was a drink.
Then the adrenaline collapsed.
She sat on a low wall outside the office and began crying. Not loudly.
Just enough that she could no longer pretend her body was calm because her mind told it to be.
Assistant Principal Fields arrived within minutes. She looked at Aaliyah’s soaked clothes, the stained books, and the students crowding the courtyard.
“What happened?” she asked.
Aaliyah answered with four words. “They came looking for me.”
The school separated everyone immediately. Lauren, Paige, and Meredith were taken to three different offices.
Aaliyah remained with the nurse until Monica arrived. She had redness on one cheek, bruising beginning along her forearm, and a small scrape on her palm.
No serious injury. The emotional shock was different.
Monica entered the health office and stopped when she saw the red stains. “Is that blood?”
“No.” Aaliyah looked down.
“Fruit punch.”
For one absurd second, Monica laughed. Then she covered her mouth because the laugh became a sob.
She hugged her daughter. Aaliyah finally let the books fall onto the chair beside them.
Darren arrived fifteen minutes later. He looked ready to interrogate the entire county.
Monica made him sit before he spoke. He obeyed, barely.
His first question was whether anyone had hit Aaliyah in the head. She said no.
His second was whether she kept fighting after the girls stopped. Aaliyah shook her head.
“Good.” Monica glared at him.
“That is not the first thing we’re discussing.” Darren raised both hands.
“I already asked about her head.”
Despite everything, Aaliyah smiled.
The investigation began that afternoon. Westlake had exterior security cameras, but trees partially blocked the closest angle.
Student phones mattered more.
By dinner, Fields had received seven recordings. Three began after the drink.
Two began during the argument. One began seconds before Lauren threw the fruit punch.
The seventh started almost two minutes earlier.
That video changed the case.
It showed Lauren, Paige, and Meredith approaching Aaliyah together. It showed Paige speaking to a student holding a phone and glancing toward Aaliyah before the confrontation began.
It showed Lauren repositioning herself after noticing multiple students recording. It showed Aaliyah trying twice to walk around them.
Then came the drink.
The shove. The first punch.
Aaliyah creating distance. Lauren reinitiating.
Paige attacking. Aaliyah retreating.
Meredith attacking. Aaliyah stopping.
Finally, Aaliyah retrieving the books and walking away.
