“I was close.”
Monica shouted from another room that he had never been close.
Aaliyah laughed so hard she had to sit down.
Darren pointed at the storage closet. “Your red textbook is in there too.”
Aaliyah found it beneath old tax files and Christmas decorations.
The orange cover had faded. Red stains remained along the bottom edge.
She opened it. Inside the front cover, in seventeen-year-old handwriting, were two words.
Aaliyah Brooks.
Nothing else.
No quote about survival. No dramatic note.
Just a name.
She ran one thumb over the ink.
For a long time, the internet had treated the story as though Aaliyah became interesting only once the drink hit her.
She knew better.
The girl sitting on the kitchen floor that first night had already been complete.
The girl crossing the courtyard carrying books had already deserved safety.
The girl wiping red liquid from her face had not earned dignity by fighting well.
The girl crying in the nurse’s office had not lost dignity by crying.
Those versions were the same person.
Sometimes Aaliyah imagined rewriting the final Friday. Not the fight.
Everything before it.
Lauren would see her in September and ask about the Merit Scholar emblem.
Aaliyah would explain it.
Lauren would say, “Cool.”
That might be all.
Maybe they would never become friends.
That would be fine.
Months later, Lauren could lose the civic fellowship without turning Aaliyah into the reason.
Paige could find other jokes.
Meredith could decide silence was not loyalty.
On the Friday afternoon, Aaliyah would leave the library with two orange books and one coffee.
She would see the three girls near the courtyard.
They might see her too.
Nobody would step into her path.
Lauren’s red drink would remain inside the cup.
Aaliyah would walk past the bench.
