Kendra looked down at her own soaked clothes.

“Yes.”

“You attacked me.”

“No.”

“You grabbed the hose!”

“You kept spraying me.”

Sadie turned toward the phones.

“Everybody saw her!”

Paige stepped forward.

“Sadie.”

“What?”

“You started it.”

Sadie stared.

Paige swallowed.

“You sprayed her from behind.”

Sadie’s expression hardened.

“She grabbed me.”

“She grabbed the hose.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

The distinction mattered.

Kendra placed the nozzle on the pavement.

Then she picked up her notebook.

Purple ink had spread across two pages.

She looked toward Mr. Dean, who was finally running from the opposite lane after hearing shouting.

Kendra did not wait.

She walked toward the school entrance.

Water dripped from her jeans with every step.

The entire confrontation had taken less than thirty seconds.

Online, it would later become a ten-second clip.

In Kendra’s memory, it felt much longer.

Mr. Dean caught up beside the gym doors.

“Kendra.”

She stopped.

He looked at her clothes.

“What happened?”

Kendra held up the ruined notebook.

“Sadie sprayed me.”

“On accident?”

“No.”

Dean looked back toward the lot.

“And then?”

“She kept doing it.”

He waited.

“I grabbed the hose.”

“Did you hit her?”

“No.”

“Did she hit you?”

“No.”

“I sprayed her back once.”

Dean nodded.

“Okay.”

Kendra expected judgment.

Instead, he opened the gym door.

“Let’s get you something dry.”

That kindness almost broke her.

Inside the locker room, Kendra borrowed an oversized Brookstone athletics T-shirt and sweatpants from the lost uniform cabinet.

Sabrina, who had been photographing the fundraiser for the newspaper, arrived five minutes later.

She had seen the end.

“What happened before I got there?”

Kendra sat on a bench.

“She sprayed me from behind.”

“Why?”

Kendra laughed without humor.

“You tell me.”

Sabrina looked at the wet notebook.

“Your totals?”

“Some are backed up online.”

“Good.”

That practical question grounded her.

Tonya arrived shortly afterward because Cameron had texted the family group chat before any administrator called.

KENDRA AND SADIE JUST FOUGHT WITH A HOSE.

Tonya had responded:

WHAT DOES THAT SENTENCE MEAN

No one had answered.
