Sadie was not removed from the car wash because the school did not consider an unfinished investigation grounds for excluding her from every activity. Instead, communication between Kendra and Sadie had to occur through Mr. Dean or official group channels.

For three weeks, the arrangement worked.

Then Kendra won the Civic Leadership Award.

Principal Bennett announced it during a morning assembly.

Kendra walked onto the auditorium stage wearing jeans and a navy sweater, accepted a small glass plaque, shook hands, and returned to her seat.

No dramatic speech.

No standing ovation.

Just polite applause.

Sadie sat with Student Council several rows away.

Emily watched her expression.

The moment Kendra’s name was called, Sadie looked down.

That evening, she posted in a private group chat without Kendra.

Of course.

Emily responded:

She has like 200 service hours.

Sadie wrote:

So do I.

Then be mad at the award committee.

No response.

Ten minutes later:

They wanted that picture.

Emily stared at the message.

What picture?

Sadie responded with a camera emoji and a brown heart.

Then deleted it.

Emily had already screenshot everything.

She waited until morning before sending it to Mr. Dean.

The cumulative review became more serious.

Sadie received another three days of in-school suspension and was warned that any further retaliatory behavior could result in removal from senior activities.

This time, the school removed her from direct car-wash supervision.

She could still volunteer, but Mr. Dean would oversee teams and equipment.

Sadie took that consequence personally.

The car wash had been her proposal.

Her father’s dealership was supplying equipment.

Now she would appear like an ordinary volunteer at an event she believed she had created.

She blamed Kendra.

Nobody had asked Kendra whether Sadie should be removed.

When Emily told her what happened, Kendra actually asked Dean whether the decision was necessary.

Dean said yes.

Kendra accepted that.

Later Sadie learned Kendra had questioned the removal.

Instead of recognizing goodwill, she told a friend Kendra was trying to look innocent.

Every road led back to the same conclusion.

Emily finally said it aloud.

“You know there is literally nothing she could do that you wouldn’t twist, right?”

Sadie stared at her.

“You’re taking her side now?”

“I’m saying you’re obsessed.”

The friendship cooled immediately.

Sadie created a smaller private chat with two friends, Paige Sullivan and Megan Lowe.

Emily was excluded.

The screenshots from that chat arrived only after the car wash.

They would explain much of what happened.

For the next month, Sadie avoided Kendra almost completely.

March became quieter.

Kendra focused on newspaper deadlines and college decisions.

She received acceptance letters from Virginia Commonwealth University, Howard, George Mason, and the University of Maryland.

Brookstone posted senior acceptances on a hallway board.

Sadie never commented publicly.

Privately, she wrote:

Howard makes sense.

Paige replied:

Why?

Sadie:

You know.

Paige:

No.

Sadie stopped responding.

That screenshot would later become part of the district file.

Kendra knew none of it at the time.

She committed to the University of Maryland after receiving a strong aid package.

Wesley immediately purchased a Maryland sweatshirt despite Kendra pointing out she would not begin classes for five months.

Tonya told him he had been waiting eighteen years for permission to buy college-parent merchandise.

He did not deny it.

Life became normal enough that the car wash started feeling exciting again.
