Madison struggled.
Simone waited.
Finally Madison said, “I knew there was a stereotype underneath it.”
That was enough.
Not accidental humor.
Not complete ignorance.
A choice.
Then Simone asked about the lake.
“Why did you kick the chair?”
Madison stared at the table.
“I wanted Chloe to laugh.”
“That’s it?”
“I wanted you embarrassed.”
“Why?”
“Because you kept acting like I didn’t matter.”
Simone almost laughed.
“I avoided you.”
“I know.”
“That felt worse.”
There it was.
Madison had mistaken the loss of control for disrespect.
If Simone argued, Madison could provoke her.
If Simone reported her, Madison could call her oversensitive.
When Simone eventually stopped reacting at all, Madison escalated until reaction became unavoidable.
The fish container was the ugliest example.
Madison admitted she knew it was research equipment.
She kicked it because Simone cared about it.
Simone accepted the apology.
She did not offer friendship.
Madison did not ask for it.
Before leaving, Simone said one thing she wanted Madison to remember.
“You didn’t push the wrong Black girl into the lake.”
Madison nodded.
“You pushed someone into a lake because you thought humiliating her would make you feel bigger.”
Simone stood.
“That’s the problem.”
The rest of college became quieter.
Simone spent the summer conducting Chesapeake fieldwork.
She graduated the following year with honors and entered a master’s program in freshwater ecology.
Walter attended graduation wearing a suit he complained about from the parking lot to the auditorium.
Professor Ramsey gave him a campus-lake fishing map.
