Victoria said nothing.
Thomas pointed toward the wooden stand.
“From a man cleaning shoes?”
Silence.
“From poverty?”
More silence.
“From someone you believed couldn't affect you?”
Victoria swallowed.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Dad.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Let me.”
His father nodded.
Chapter 11: The Test
Daniel stood beside the shoe-shine stand.
He could feel dozens of people watching.
He hated speeches.
But he had not spent three days there to end with humiliation.
“I wasn't here to trick anyone.”
Victoria looked at him.
Daniel continued.
“I wasn't trying to catch people saying the wrong thing so I could punish them.”
He looked toward Ben.
Monica.
James.
Robert.
Marcus.
“I wanted to know what this company felt like from a place I had never experienced.”
He pointed toward the entrance.
“I've walked through those doors my entire life.”
“People hold them open.”
“They know my father.”
“They know my last name.”
“That makes every interaction easier.”
Daniel touched the wooden stand.
“So I removed the name.”
He looked at Victoria.
“And some things changed immediately.”
She lowered her eyes.
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out the folded five-dollar bill.
Then held it up.
“The first morning, someone dropped this at my feet.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
“She told me I should be grateful because I was poor.”
No one spoke.
“She told me people like me should know their place.”
Thomas looked at Victoria.
Daniel went on.
“Yesterday, I was told the company entrance needed to look professional.”
“Apparently a man cleaning shoes made it look cheap.”
He looked toward Marcus.
“Security was asked to remove me.”
“Some people followed orders.”
“Some resisted.”
“Some were afraid to resist.”
That distinction mattered.
Daniel looked at James.
“You tried.”
James lowered his eyes.
Daniel said:
“Thank you.”
Then he turned toward Victoria again.
“The issue isn't that you were rude to the chairman’s son.”
She looked at him.
“The issue is that you thought I wasn't.”
That sentence landed harder than any threat could have.
“If you only regret what happened because you learned my last name, you haven't understood anything.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
Daniel continued calmly.
“I remember every word.”
“I wasn't here for money.”
“I wasn't here for revenge.”
“I came to see the truth.”
He paused.
“And today, you failed that test.”
Chapter 12: The Question Thomas Asked
Thomas walked toward Victoria.
“Who approved your current position?”
The question confused her.
“Sir?”
“Who promoted you to Senior Vice President?”
Victoria swallowed.
“You did.”
“No.”
She frowned.
Thomas looked toward Marcus.
“Mr. Hale, would you bring me the personnel file Daniel asked you to prepare?”
Daniel turned.
“I asked him to prepare?”
Thomas smiled slightly.
“You weren't the only one testing things.”
Marcus disappeared inside.
Two minutes later, he returned with a folder.
Thomas opened it.
He removed the original promotion letter.
Then held it toward Victoria.
“Recognize this signature?”
She looked.
Thomas Whitmore.
“Yes.”
