“Check the beginning.”
That sentence mattered.
Temporary suspensions were issued for all three while the school reviewed video.
One day.
Possibly longer.
Monica Reed arrived furious.
Darius arrived fifteen minutes later.
Monica watched the clip.
The whole clip.
Paper dump.
Blocking.
Tess grabbing.
Paige attacking.
Aaliyah pushing.
Fall.
Stop.
When it ended, she looked toward Marshall.
“Why is my daughter suspended?”
“Temporary while we investigate physical contact.”
“You have the physical contact on video.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you investigating?”
“Whether any force continued after the threat ended, whether additional videos exist, prior context—”
Monica interrupted.
“You have prior context.”
Marshall nodded.
“Yes.”
That admission changed the room.
Darius spoke for the first time.
“How many times has Paige been warned?”
Marshall did not answer immediately.
“Two formal interventions.”
“And informal?”
“At least one.”
“Then this didn’t start today.”
“No.”
Darius leaned back.
“Okay.”
No shouting.
That somehow felt more serious.
Aaliyah sat beside her parents.
Paper still inside her hair.
She had missed some near the bun.
Monica noticed.
Her expression softened.
“Come here.”
“Mom.”
“Come here.”
She began pulling tiny white strips from Aaliyah’s curls.
One.
Two.
Five.
Ten.
Aaliyah looked away.
That was when she cried.
Not during the attack.
Not in the nurse’s office.
When her mother started removing shredded paper from her hair.
“I hate this.”
Monica continued.
“I know.”
“I hate that everyone recorded.”
“I know.”
“I hate that I did exactly what she wanted.”
Her mother stopped.
“What?”
“She wanted me angry.”
Monica held a paper strip between two fingers.
“Were you?”
“Yes.”
“Did she have a reason to make you angry?”
“Yes.”
“Then anger is not a confession.”
Aaliyah looked at her.
Monica returned to her hair.
“Actions matter.”
“Feelings are allowed.”
Aaliyah remembered that later.
Paige told a different story.
Her parents arrived separately.
Mother Lauren Mercer first.
Father Scott Mercer later.
Caleb came from another class after hearing what happened.
Paige cried.
She said the paper was a prank.
Aaliyah overreacted.
Tess tried to calm them.
Aaliyah threw Tess.
Then shoved Paige.
Caleb sat against the wall.
Silent.
Lauren asked:
“Did you dump the paper on her?”
“Yes, but—”
“Why?”
“It was funny.”
“Did she laugh?”
“No.”
“Then?”
Paige looked at Caleb.
“Can you say something?”
He did not.
That frightened her.
“Caleb.”
He stared at the floor.
Lauren noticed.
