Aaliyah immediately stepped away.
“I told you not to touch me.”
Tess stared up.
Shock.
Humiliation.
Paige saw her friend down.
Whatever remained of the plan disappeared.
She lunged.
Her hand struck toward Aaliyah’s shoulder.
Aaliyah blocked.
“Stop.”
Paige swung again.
Aaliyah turned her body.
The hand passed.
“Stop!”
Paige grabbed at the front of Aaliyah’s jacket.
Aaliyah knocked the hand away.
Paige came forward again.
One student shouted:
“Paige, chill!”
She did not.
Aaliyah backed onto the edge of the grass.
Paper stuck to her shoes.
Paige pushed.
Aaliyah caught both forearms.
Moved them outward.
Released.
“Back up.”
Paige stepped in again.
Another swing.
Aaliyah ducked.
Then pushed at Paige’s shoulders to create space.
Paige stumbled.
Recovered.
Came again.
The fourth advance ended differently.
Paige planted one foot on shredded paper scattered over the concrete edge.
Her sneaker slid.
Aaliyah raised one arm to block another grab.
Their forearms hit.
Paige’s balance broke.
She stumbled sideways.
Dropped onto the grass.
One hand caught the ground.
Then hip.
Silence.
Aaliyah stopped.
Immediately.
She did not step toward Paige.
Did not kick.
Did not hit Tess.
Did not say anything triumphant.
For several seconds she simply stood there breathing hard with shredded paper still caught through her hair.
Then she looked at the broom.
Walked toward it.
Picked it up.
Paige flinched.
Several students did too.
Aaliyah noticed.
Her face changed.
Not anger.
Something closer to disgust.
“You really think I’m going to hit you with a broom?”
Nobody answered.
Aaliyah looked around at the phones.
Then lowered the broom until the bristles touched the ground.
She turned.
Walked away.
Paper clung to the back of her jacket.
The camera followed her for three seconds.
Then stopped.
That fourteen-second clip would be watched more than seventeen million times.
Almost nobody who watched it initially knew what happened before Paige lifted the plastic container.
The school knew less than the internet within the first hour.
A campus aide arrived after the physical contact ended.
Tess had a bruised hip.
Paige’s palm was scraped.
Aaliyah had redness around one shoulder and a small scratch near her cheek.
All three were separated.
The first incident description said:
Physical fight following a dispute over student newspapers.
Aaliyah read it.
“No.”
Assistant Principal Marshall looked up.
“What?”
“That is not what happened.”
“We’re still gathering information.”
“Then don’t write that.”
Marshall paused.
Fair.
“What would you write?”
Aaliyah answered:
“Paige dumped shredded newspapers on me. She blocked me from leaving. Tess grabbed me. Then Paige came at me.”
Marshall made notes.
“Did you push Paige?”
“Yes.”
“Did you grab Tess?”
“I grabbed her wrist when she grabbed me.”
“Did you make either one fall?”
“My movement contributed.”
That answer surprised Marshall.
Most students denied everything until video forced admission.
Aaliyah added:
“I stopped when they were down.”
Marshall nodded.
“We’ll check.”
Aaliyah looked at her.
