The basketball-court confrontation happened two weeks later. Kayla finished a journalism meeting shortly after three thirty and decided to cut through the outdoor courts rather than walk around the athletics building. Her black bag contained a laptop, camera batteries, notebooks, and a portable recorder.

Several basketball players had already finished an informal workout. Cole remained outside with a few friends.

Lucas later told investigators that Cole noticed Kayla before she noticed him. One teammate quietly told him to leave her alone. Cole answered, “I’m just talking.”

Kayla entered the court with her bag over one shoulder. Cole moved toward her.

She tried to pass.

He blocked the path.

She moved again.

He brushed against her shoulder, and the bag slipped onto the court.

Students laughed.

Kayla looked down.

Then at Cole.

“Pick it up.”

Cole smiled.

“You dropped it.”

“You hit my shoulder.”

“I walked past you.”

Kayla bent and lifted the bag.

She could have walked around the court.

Cole followed.

“You really think everyone has to move for you now?”

Kayla stopped.

“What do you want?”

“I want you to stop acting like you own this place.”

Kayla stared.

“I’m walking to my car.”

Cole stepped closer.

“You spent all year getting people punished.”

“No.”

“You spent all year getting yourself punished.”

Cole’s expression hardened.

The students on the bleachers became quiet.

Kayla continued.

“I didn’t write your messages.”

“I didn’t make you talk about my scholarship.”

“I didn’t suspend you.”

Cole leaned forward.

“You know exactly what you’re doing.”

Kayla shook her head.

“That sentence doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means the school treats you like you’re untouchable.”

Kayla laughed once.

“Untouchable?”

“You’ve spent eight months talking about me.”

“Everything becomes harassment with you.”

“Then stop harassing me.”

Several students reacted softly.

Cole glanced toward them.

Kayla saw the embarrassment arrive.

She stepped backward.

“Move.”

He did not.
