Kayla’s success was never allowed to be ordinary.

She asked why that mattered so much.

Cole remained silent for several seconds.

Then he said, “Because I thought people like me were supposed to be the ones who belonged here.”

Kayla stared.

“People like you?”

Cole swallowed.

“Families who’d been here.”

“Athletes.”

“People who knew the school.”

Kayla waited.

“And white?”

Cole looked at her.

“Yes.”

It was the first time he said the part he had spent months avoiding.

Kayla did not feel triumphant.

She felt tired.

Then she asked about the court.

“Why did you walk toward me?”

Cole said he was angry about the independent review.

He knew several teammates had begun talking to investigators.

He believed Kayla was destroying his reputation.

“So you knocked my bag down?”

Cole nodded.

“And then?”

“I wanted you to react.”

“Why?”

“Because everybody kept saying you were calm and I was obsessed.”

Kayla understood.

If she exploded, Cole could use the reaction as proof that his description of her had always been right.

Instead, he had become the person who lost control.

“You punched me because I embarrassed you.”

Cole nodded.

“Yes.”

Kayla sat back.

That explanation fit the video better than anything else.

The silence.

The students watching.

Her refusal to retreat from what she had earned.

Cole’s anger had required an audience almost as much as his jokes did.

He apologized again.

Kayla accepted the apology.

She did not offer friendship.

Cole did not ask for it.

Before leaving, she said one thing.

“You didn’t punch the wrong Black girl.”

Cole looked up.

“There was no version where doing that to somebody weaker would’ve been okay.”

He nodded.

“I know.”
