The porch roof was gone. One wall was black from fire and every window had broken. Part of the barn had fallen while the garden had burned down to the soil, but the cabin was still standing. Clara climbed from the wagon before Silas could stop her. She crossed the ruined yard and fell to her knees in the wet ash.

Her hands covered her face. I thought I had lost everything. Silas lifted Toby from the wagon and set him down. Holding his father's fingers, the child took small steps toward Clara. Toby stared at her blackened dress and tear-covered face.

His lower lip began to shake. "Mama," he whispered. Clara became completely still. Toby pulled away from Silas and stumbled into her arms. "Mama," he said again.

A broken cry escaped Clara as she held him against her chest. She pressed her face into his golden hair and rocked him in the rain. Silas knelt beside them. "You do not have to call her that, Toby," he said gently. Clara looked at Silas through her tears.

"He may call me anything that makes him feel safe." Silas lowered his head. The strength that had carried him through the fire finally left him. His shoulders shook and tears fell into the black earth. Clara reached for him.

For the first time, Silas allowed someone else to hold him while he wept. The three of them remained together in the ruined yard as rain fell over the cabin. "The house survived," Clara whispered. Silas looked at her and Toby. "So did we."

During the following weeks, help came from every direction. Families from Stevensville arrived with flour, blankets, and lumber. A wagon from Missoula brought tools, seed, and medicine. Even people who had lost their own homes shared whatever they could spare. Jedodiah and Sarah came every morning.

Their ranch house had burned. Yet Jedodiah still helped Silas rebuild Clara's porch. "We drank from your well when our children were thirsty," he told her. "Now you will take our help without arguing." Clara did not argue.

The fire had taken several cattle, but many had escaped into the southern field. Silas found them 3 days later and guided them home. He repaired the barn first so the animals would have shelter. Then he replaced the cabin windows and covered the burned wall before colder weather arrived. Clara worked beside him.

At night, she cooked for everyone helping at the ranch. Toby carried nails in a small tin cup and followed Silas from one job to another. One evening, Clara noticed Silas hiding his right hand beneath the table. Let me see it. It is nothing.

She reached across and turned his hand over. The palm was red and blistered from the moment he had crushed the fire on her dress. You should have shown me sooner. There was too much work. There will always be work.

Clara washed the burn and wrapped his hand in clean cloth. Silas watched her fingers move around his palm. I thought you would hate me when I returned, he said. Part of me wanted to. And now Clara tied the bandage.
