Then tell me why. Silas looked toward the sleeping boy before facing her again. Because I loved you when I was too young to understand what love required. I thought wanting you was enough. Now I know love means returning, working, forgiving, and staying when life becomes hard.

His voice shook, but his eyes did not leave hers. I love the woman you became without me, Clara. I love your courage, your sharp tongue, and the way you opened your door when you had every reason to close it. I love watching Toby follow you through this house. I love hearing him call you mama.

Tears gathered in Clara's eyes. I have no fine ring, Silas continued. I have only these hands, this ranch, and every day still left in me. Clara closed her fingers over his bandaged palm. Then do not leave again, Silas Thorne.

Never. It was the same promise he had made as a young man. But this time, Clara knew its true weight. She rested her forehead against his. Silas held her as the windmill turned outside in the winter night.

From beside the hearth came a sleepy voice. Papa. Silas and Clara turned. Toby sat beneath his quilt, rubbing his eyes. I am here, Silas said.

Toby smiled. Papa comes back. Silas closed his eyes for one brief moment. Clara took his hand and led him toward the child. That winter tested his promise.

In January, a snowstorm struck the Bitterroot Valley. The wind buried fences and trapped cattle in the northern pasture. Silas left before daylight to guide the herd toward shelter. By nightfall, he had not returned. Clara stood at the window, staring into the white darkness.

Every old fear came back. She remembered another winter when Silas had promised to return and did not. Toby pulled a blanket around his shoulders and walked to her side. "Papa comes back," he said. Clara knelt and held him.

"Yes, he does." Hours later, the windmill bell rang outside. Clara opened the door and saw Silas leading his exhausted horse through the snow. He carried a newborn calf beneath his coat. Toby ran into the storm before Clara could stop him.

Silas dropped to one knee and caught his son with his free arm. I told you, Toby cried. Papa comes back. Clara watched them from the doorway. Something inside her finally released the girl who had spent 2 years waiting at that same window.

Silas had returned. More importantly, he had stayed. When spring reached the valley, Clara and Silas married beneath the cottonwood tree near the river where they had survived the fire. Jedodiah stood beside Silas. Sarah helped Clara prepare a simple cream dress.
