She was steady. She had always been steady, and she began to thread it with the focus of someone learning something real for the first time rather than managing something necessary. Her brow came down slightly, concentrating. The afternoon light from the south window was on both of them, warm for the first time since autumn, carrying in it the particular quality of March light that suggests spring without committing to it. From the kitchen, they could hear Bess narrating something to no one in particular about what she had seen on the road that morning.
They could hear Tilda telling her in Tilda's characteristically precise way that the animal she described was more likely a coyote than a wolf. And here were the reasons why. They could hear the ranch outside Harland's voice, the cattle, the particular wind that came off the eastern pastures in the afternoon. Garrick's boots crossed the kitchen floor. He stopped.
Odora could hear him stop. She could hear the specific quality of stillness that meant he had looked in through the sewing room doorway and seen what was there. His daughter sitting at the worktable in Elizabeth's sewing room, threading a needle for the woman who would become something in this house that neither of them had a word for yet, but both of them could see the shape of. He did not come in. He did not say anything.
He stood in the hallway for a moment and then his boots moved on toward the back door and outside. Marin looked at Odora. Odora looked at Marin. He's going to check on the east cattle, Marin said. I expect so.
He does that every afternoon now. He didn't used to. She turned the threaded needle in her fingers, examining it. He's different. So are you, Odora said.
Marin considered this with the seriousness she brought to most things. Is that she stopped, started again. Is that because of you? Odora looked at her. Some of it maybe, but mostly it's because he decided to be.
She paused. People change when they decide to. I didn't make him decide anything. You made him see things he wasn't seeing. That's different from making him change.
She held the girl's gaze. You can put something in front of a person all day and it won't move them if they're not ready. He was ready. He just needed a reason. Marin was quiet for a moment.
