She looked around the room before giving another quiet nod. "Thank you." she whispered softly. It was the first time Ethan had heard her voice. The next morning, Ethan awoke before sunrise as he always did. By the time he stepped outside, he noticed something unexpected.

The horses had already been fed. Fresh water filled every trough. The chickens had scattered grain across the yard. Even the garden had been watered. He looked around in surprise before spotting the woman carrying an empty bucket toward the well.

"You did all of this?" he asked. She nodded. "I wanted to help." "You did not have to." "I know." she replied quietly.

"But kindness should be returned with kindness." Those simple words stayed with Ethan throughout the day. As the days passed, they settled into a peaceful routine. Ethan worked with the cattle while the woman cared for the garden, repaired torn blankets, and cleaned the stable with remarkable attention to detail. She treated every task with patience, no matter how small.

One afternoon, Ethan noticed an injured hawk resting near the fence. Before he could reach it, the woman carefully wrapped the frightened bird in a soft cloth and gently examined its wing. She gathered herbs growing along the creek and prepared a soothing paste that she carefully applied to the injury. "Where did you learn that?" Ethan asked.

"My grandmother taught me." She answered. The hawk remained calm in her hands as though it understood she meant no harm. Several days later, the bird flew back into the sky, circling the ranch once before disappearing beyond the hills. Ethan could not help but admire her quiet wisdom.

Words soon spread through neighboring ranches that Ethan had brought an Apache woman to live on his property. Not everyone approved. One afternoon, Ethan's long-time neighbor, Samuel Turner, rode through the front gate. "I came as a friend." Samuel said.

"People in town are talking." Ethan leaned against the fence. "They usually do." Samuel lowered his voice. "They say you know nothing about her."

Ethan looked toward the garden where the woman carefully planted fresh vegetables beneath the warm afternoon sun. "I know enough." He replied. Samuel frowned. "And what exactly is that?"

"I know she works harder than anyone I have met. I know she treats every living creature with respect. And I know she has shown nothing except gratitude since arriving here." Samuel remained silent. "There are plenty of people with friendly faces who cannot say the same."

Ethan added. Samuel had no answer. After a moment, he tipped his hat and rode away. That evening, dark clouds gathered across the valley. Strong winds swept through the ranch, shaking trees and rattling the barn doors.
