Something inside him changed immediately.

He did not run around the outside of the bowl.

That route was too slow.

He stepped onto his skateboard.

The move happened so quickly most phones barely caught the beginning.

Isaiah dropped directly into the deep section.

His board rolled down the curved wall.

He accelerated across the concrete basin with his dreadlocks pulling loose behind him.

Holloway turned at the sound of people shouting.

For half a second, he saw a shirtless Black man moving toward him at speed.

He had no idea who Isaiah was.

Isaiah came up the opposite transition.

The board left the concrete.

He stepped off as he cleared the final distance.

His feet hit the ground near Holloway.

The skateboard continued past them.

“Get away from my brother!”

Holloway turned.

“Back up!”

Jalen was still sitting on the concrete.

Isaiah moved between them.

Holloway shoved one hand toward Isaiah’s chest.

“Back up!”

Isaiah caught the wrist.

“Do not touch him again.”

Holloway pulled.

Isaiah did not release.

The officer’s other hand moved downward toward his belt.

Isaiah saw it.

Training replaced thought.

He stepped inside.

Turned Holloway’s arm.

Shifted his weight.

The officer lost balance.

Isaiah drove through the motion and put him onto the concrete.

Not head-first.

Not violently enough to continue once the threat stopped.

Holloway landed across his back and side.

His cap rolled away.

The crowd erupted.

Isaiah went down with him.

One knee controlled the officer’s arm.

One hand pinned the wrist away from the duty belt.

His other forearm stabilized across the upper torso without striking.

Holloway struggled.

“Get off me!”

“Stop reaching.”

“Get off!”

“Stop reaching for your weapon.”

Jalen stared from several feet away.

The image would later become the most replayed frame from the entire video.

A muscular Black man with long dreadlocks kneeling over a white police officer on the graffiti-covered floor of a skate bowl.

Holloway on his back.

A crowd lining the rim.

The teenager in mustard clothing sitting nearby.

Without context, the photograph could tell almost any story someone wanted.

Isaiah knew that even while adrenaline flooded his body.

He did not punch Holloway.

He did not kick.

He did not take the officer’s weapon.

He controlled the wrist until Holloway stopped trying to reach downward.

Then Isaiah said something quietly enough that only Holloway’s body camera captured it clearly.

“I’m going to let you up when you stop fighting me.”

Holloway stared at him.

“Who the hell are you?”

Isaiah’s breathing slowed.
