Sarah smiled.

“Call.”

Marcus stepped several feet away and dialed Elaine.

She answered immediately.

“Marcus?”

“I’m okay.”

Elaine began crying.

“Oh, thank God.”

“I’m okay,” he repeated.

“The news is everywhere. They’re saying a passenger helped land the plane. They’re saying it was you.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“How much does Zoe know?”

“Nothing. I kept the television off.”

“Good.”

“Marcus, there are videos online already.”

“I figured.”

“She’s going to find out.”

“I know.”

“When are you coming home?”

He looked toward the aircraft.

“I don’t know yet. There’ll be interviews, investigators, paperwork. They’ll want statements from everybody.”

Elaine was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “She’s going to be proud of you.”

Marcus looked down.

“I broke my promise.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“I told her I was done flying.”

“You told her you would come home.”

Marcus said nothing.

Elaine continued.

“And from where I’m sitting, it sounds like you did everything humanly possible to keep that promise.”

Two days later, Marcus landed in Seattle on a commercial flight.

This time he sat in the back.

No cockpit.

No emergencies.

No one asking for fighter pilots.

By then his face had appeared on television networks across three countries.

Cell phone videos showed him walking through the cabin after landing.

Passengers described the mysterious former military pilot who had helped save Flight 602.

Reporters were waiting outside the terminal.

Marcus ignored them.

He wanted only one person.

Zoe stood behind the security barrier beside Elaine.

The moment she saw him, she ran.

Marcus dropped his bag.

His daughter slammed into him so hard he nearly lost his balance.

He wrapped both arms around her.

For several seconds, neither said anything.

Then Zoe pulled away just enough to look at him.

Her eyes were wet.

“You flew a plane.”

Marcus sighed.

“I helped.”

“You said you didn’t fly anymore.”

“I know.”

“You promised.”

There it was.

The moment Marcus had feared since Ireland.

He crouched until they were eye level.
