We're going through a period of significant restructuring at HP, Richard Cole said. As part of that, we're reviewing compensation and role structures across all 11 properties. We want to offer you a position. I have a position, Daniel said. A different one, Cole said.

Operations development director. It's a corporate role. You'd be working across multiple properties, identifying efficiency improvements, training and implementing new protocols based on what Marcus tells us you've been doing informally for years. Daniel was quiet. The compensation package is significantly higher than your current position.

Cole said, "We're talking nearly double your current salary, benefits package, and a company vehicle allowance." A pause. Victoria Ms. Hayes has been advocating for this role specifically for you for the last several months. Several months, not 3 weeks, not since the rain.

Months. Daniel looked at Marcus again. Marcus was still looking at the middle distance with the specific expression of a man who is pretending he doesn't know something he definitely knows. I appreciate the offer, Daniel said carefully. Can I have some time to think about it?

Of course, Cole said. Take the week. We'd like an answer by Friday. The call ended. The office was quiet.

Daniel said, "How long have you known about this?" "6 weeks," Marcus said. "6 weeks," she called me. "Ask me to document your informal contributions, the repairs, the training, the cost-saving interventions." She built a business case.

He paused. Daniel, she didn't just offer you a job. She invented the job. It didn't exist before her. Daniel sat down in the chair across from Marcus's desk, which he had never done.

Not in 3 years. He sat down because his legs needed a moment. She invented the job. He thought about the coffee at 7 a.m. He thought about the science fair sign.

Handlettered anglerfish in the corners. He thought about the text, which hospital. He thought about her voice that first night. I didn't come for your work. And he thought about the thing that was now sitting directly in front of him.

Unavoidable. She had been doing this longer than he knew. She had been watching, documenting, building before he was aware of being watched at all. Before the rain, before the dinner, before any of it, he pulled out his phone and called her. She picked up on the first ring.
