Lauren stared at her like she'd never seen her before. Then, right on cue, Karen opened the door. The entire parking lot stood just outside. Phones raised, faces grim.
Jessica and Michelle stepped forward. They didn't yell. They didn't cry. They simply handed Ryan and Brandon divorce papers.
"You've embarrassed our families enough," Jessica said. Michelle nodded. "You're done." Tara tried to bolt, pushing past Ryan, but Chief Daniels stepped in.
"Ma'am, I need you to stay right here."
"For what?" she shouted.
"For the recording," he said calmly. "We need to talk about attempted false reporting and conspiracy." Tara's face broke. Ryan didn't defend her.
Brandon didn't defend her. Lauren didn't defend her. No one did. The lies were finally standing in the same room with the truth and losing.
Lauren looked at me, tears building but not falling. "Jason, please."
"Not here," I said. "Not anymore." She dropped her gaze. For the first time in months, every single person in that room knew exactly where they stood and exactly how far they had fallen.
Room 12 wasn't built for justice. But that night, it became the closest thing to a courtroom this town had ever seen. And I didn't have to act as judge or jury. Their own words did the work for me.
The air inside the motel room felt heavy after Tara's recording played. Not hot, just thick with the kind of silence that comes when the truth finally settles and there's nowhere left to run. Ryan stared at the floor like he was reading a confession written in the linoleum. Brandon leaned against the wall, breathing through whatever was left of his denial.
Tara trembled, her posture crumbling inch by inch. Lauren's makeup had begun to streak, but she wasn't crying. She was panicking. I held the stack of messages in my hands.
Not waving them. Not shaking them. Just holding them like a ledger that needed balancing. "Let's stop pretending," I said.
"The four of you built this together." I read the next set of messages. "Lauren to Ryan: Jason's too soft to even question it. Don't worry."
"Lauren to Brandon: Once Jason snaps, I'll have the proof I need. Lauren to Tara: He won't see it coming. He never does." Every word hit like a hollow thud against the cheap motel walls.
Ryan swallowed hard. Brandon covered his face. Tara pressed her back against the dresser like she needed it to keep her upright. Then I read the worst one, quietly but loud enough for each of them to hear.
"I just need him broken enough to sign." Lauren's head dropped. Outside, Karen tapped the window twice. Showtime.
