The man was defeated before he ever walked onto the site. By the time I was done with Ryan at the construction site, the resistance was gone from every one of them. All that was left was to bring the whole cast together and let the truth burn through whatever lies they thought they had left. Room 12 at the highway motel was the kind of place you only stay if everywhere else is full or your life is falling apart.

Peeling paint, flickering vacancy sign, gravel lot where every car looked like it had a story. Perfect. Karen set it up. She knew the manager, a grumpy old man who'd seen enough affairs and breakups in that motel to write a textbook.

When she explained the situation, he didn't flinch. "As long as it's legal," he said, sliding her the key. "I don't care what kind of circus you put in there." The circus started assembling itself by noon.

My phone buzzed nonstop. Lauren: "We need to talk without lawyers. Please." Tara: "I think we can work something out. I can mediate."

Ryan: "I'll hear you out. Don't try anything stupid." Brandon: "We should settle this privately, for everyone's sake." Jessica: "I'd like one last piece of clarity from my husband. Give me a time and place."

Michelle: "I want confirmation. I'll be there." Six people. Six different motives.

One room. By 8:00 p.m., the highway motel lot looked like the opening scene of a bad crime documentary. Dim lights, quiet tension, strangers standing far apart, pretending they weren't waiting for the same thing. Inside Room 12, I sat on a plastic chair by the window.

Peeling wallpaper, lopsided lamp, a bathroom door that didn't close all the way. Exactly the kind of place where lies can't pretend to be fancy. The first knock came right on time. Tara.

She walked in fast, trying to look confident, but her eyes gave her away. Darting around, checking corners, making sure she wasn't about to walk into an ambush. "Jason," she said, forcing a calm voice. "I'm here as a neutral party."

"You're here because you were invited," I said. "Have a seat." She didn't. Second knock.

Lauren. She stepped in wearing plain clothes this time. Hair tied back, makeup smeared from the night before. She froze when she saw Tara.

"You told me you weren't coming," she snapped.

Tara swallowed. "I thought Jason would be calmer if—"

"Sit down," I said.

Neither did. Third knock. Brandon. He stepped in, clutching his jacket like it might keep him together.

He saw Lauren and Tara and immediately muttered, "Oh, hell." Fourth knock. Ryan. He entered quietly.

Shoulders sagged, eyes on the floor. He didn't look at me. He didn't look at anyone. He just stood near the wall like a man waiting for a firing squad.
