Madison rubbed her hands together. “I thought you were trying to prove something.”

Naomi almost laughed. “Everything I did became evidence for the story you already had.”

Madison nodded.

That was exactly it.

If Naomi dressed simply, she was poor. If she dressed well, she was pretending.

If she succeeded, institutions were helping her. If she challenged the assumption, she had an attitude.

There had been no possible behavior capable of disproving a belief designed to reinterpret every outcome. Madison had never actually investigated whether the belief was true.

Naomi asked about the trash can. Madison’s eyes filled.

She said the Northwestern suspension and students calling her obsessed had humiliated her. When she saw Naomi sitting alone, she wanted one moment where everyone laughed at Naomi instead.

“So you dumped garbage on me.”

“Yes.”

“Because you wanted the hierarchy back.”

Madison looked confused by the word. Naomi explained.

“You needed me below you again.”

Madison became quiet.

Finally she nodded. “Probably.”

Then Naomi asked why she swung.

Madison said the crowd stopped laughing. Naomi’s answers made people look at Madison differently.

For the first time, the joke was failing while everyone watched. She panicked and became angry.

“I wanted you to stop talking,” she admitted.

“So you hit me.”

“Yes.”

Naomi accepted the apology but did not offer friendship.

Before leaving, she addressed the reveal everyone else cared about.

“Finding out who my father is should be the least important thing you learned.”

Madison nodded.

“If I were exactly who you thought I was—a Black girl whose family couldn’t afford this place without a scholarship—you still would’ve been wrong.”

“I know.”

Naomi looked at her. “Make sure you actually know.”

Graduation arrived in June. Hawthorne arranged white chairs across the athletic field while families filled temporary bleachers.
