Can we have ice cream? Marcus laughed a real genuine laugh that seemed to come from somewhere deep inside him. We can have all the ice cream in the world. They went to their usual spot. The little shop with the red awning two blocks from the apartment.

The owner, a heavyset man named S, who'd known Marcus for years, took one look at their faces and knew something had changed. "Good news?" he asked. "The best news?" Marcus couldn't stop smiling. "The very best."

S nodded slowly, a grin spreading across his face. "Ice cream's on the house today. You don't have to. I want to." S was already scooping.

Chocolate with rainbow sprinkles for the little one, right? And vanilla for you. You remembered. I remember all my regulars. He handed the cones across the counter.

Congratulations, Marcus. Whatever happened, you deserve it. They sat at their usual table by the window, watching people walk by. The sun was still shining warm and bright, and everything felt different. The same street, the same shop, the same wobbly table they always sat at, but different, better, like the whole world had shifted slightly and suddenly fit together in a way it hadn't before.

"Daddy," Lily said between licks of her ice cream. "Yeah, what's going to happen now?" Marcus considered the question. What was going to happen? For months, his entire life had been focused on the custody hearing.

Every decision, every sacrifice, every exhausting double shift, all of it aimed at one goalkeeping Lily. And now that goal was achieved. What came next? Now, he said slowly. We live.

We go to school. We eat dinner together. We read bedtime stories. We just live. But you'll still work a lot.

The question hit harder than Marcus expected because she was right. Even with custody secured, nothing had really changed about their day-to-day life. He still had two jobs. He still worked 14-hour days. He still barely saw his daughter during the week.

Yeah, he admitted. I'll still work a lot, but I'm going to try to do better. Find more time for us. Okay. Lily nodded.

But there was something in her eyes and understanding beyond her years. It's okay, Daddy. I know you work because you love me. Marcus' throat tightened. How'd you get so smart, huh?

Mrs. Patterson says I get it from you. Mrs. Patterson is a wise woman. They finished their ice cream and walked home hand in hand. The afternoon stretched out ahead of them. No work tonight, no obligations, no court hearings hanging over their heads, just a father and his daughter together.
