There was a hotel charge from the previous night. It wasn't particularly large, but the description included the hotel where the party had taken place. I couldn't tell from the transaction alone what the payment covered, so I took a screenshot and saved it. Then, I returned to the photograph. I zoomed in, looking at George's face and the way Vivian was standing beside him.
It wasn't proof of an affair, but combined with what I had been told, it was enough to make me suspicious. I decided to check whether there was anything else I should know. Vivian had previously mentioned that she and George occasionally exchanged messages about family matters. I had never questioned it. Now, however, I couldn't ignore the possibility that their communication had gone beyond ordinary family conversations.
I checked the notifications on our shared tablet, which Vivian sometimes used while working from home. George's name appeared along with a message preview. It read, "Last night was difficult to forget. We need to be more careful." I felt a sudden wave of anger, but I forced myself to remain calm. I took a photograph of the screen with my phone.
That message changed everything. It suggested that whatever had happened at the hotel wasn't an isolated misunderstanding. I didn't know how long they had been involved, how many times they had met, or what Vivian had been telling George about our marriage. But I knew I needed answers before confronting either of them. So, I started looking for someone who could investigate the situation properly.
I wanted facts, not another argument filled with denials. On Monday morning, I contacted a private investigator whose name had been recommended to me by a colleague. I explained that I suspected my wife was having an affair with my cousin, and that I needed to establish what had been happening before confronting either of them. He listened without interrupting. "Do you have any evidence already?" he asked.
"I have a photograph of them together at a party, information that they left together, and a message between them suggesting something happened the previous night." "That gives me somewhere to start. Do you know whether they’ve been meeting regularly?" "No, that’s what I need to find out." He explained how his investigation would work, what information he needed from me, and how long it might take. I gave him their names, photographs, and the details of the hotel where the party had taken place. Before ending the call, he asked whether I wanted him to investigate only the night of the party or look into their previous activities as well. "Everything," I replied.
"I want to know how long this has been going on." Over the following days, I tried to maintain my normal routine. Vivian seemed completely unaware that I had started investigating her. She continued going to work, preparing dinner, and talking to me about ordinary things. Sometimes I wondered how she could sit across from me at the dinner table and behave as though nothing had happened. Then I remembered that she probably believed I knew nothing.
That thought helped me keep my composure. On Wednesday evening, she mentioned that George had called her about an upcoming family gathering. "What did he want?" I asked casually. "Nothing important. He was asking whether we were going to attend." "And what did you tell him?" "That we'd probably be there." She continued eating, apparently unconcerned.
I looked at her and wondered how many times she had spoken to him while sitting in the same room with me. The following afternoon, the investigator called. "I have some information for you," he said. "Would you be available to meet tomorrow?" We arranged to meet at his office the next morning. When I arrived, he had already prepared a folder containing photographs, dates, and a written timeline.
He started with the night of the party. According to his findings, Vivian and George had spent much of the evening together at the hotel where the party was held. Several photographs showed them standing close, kissing, and eventually leaving the party together shortly after midnight. The investigator had followed them and documented their arrival at another hotel around 12:30 a.m. They stayed there until approximately 2:00 a.m., when they left separately. I sat quietly as he explained everything.
"There's something else you should know." he continued. He turned to another page in the report. "They’ve been meeting for at least several weeks. I documented multiple occasions when they met without you knowing." I looked at the dates. One meeting had taken place on a Tuesday afternoon when Vivian had told me she was staying late at work.
Another had happened on a Saturday when she claimed she was visiting a friend. There were photographs of George's car outside a restaurant where Vivian had been seen having lunch with him. There were also pictures of them meeting at a small hotel on the outskirts of town. I felt my jaw tighten. "So, this wasn't the first time?" "No." "Based on what I’ve documented, the relationship appears to have started well before the party." I looked through the remaining photographs.
They weren't just standing together or having innocent conversations. Their behavior made it clear that they were romantically involved. The investigator gave me copies of everything. "Is there anything else I should know?" I asked. "Not at the moment, but I would recommend keeping these documents somewhere secure." I thanked him and left his office.
For several minutes, I sat inside my car without starting the engine. I had gone there hoping to confirm whether my wife had slept with another man. Instead, I had discovered that she had been carrying on a relationship with my own cousin while continuing to share a home and a marriage with me. What made it worse was realizing how easily they had both looked me in the eye and pretended everything was normal. I drove home with the folder on the passenger seat.
By then, I had no intention of pretending our marriage could simply return to normal. But before I made my next move, I wanted to hear Vivian explain herself, and I wanted to see whether she would tell me the truth when given the opportunity. I waited until Saturday morning to speak with Vivian. I didn't want to have the conversation while either of us was rushing to work, and I wanted to make sure I could remain calm regardless of what she said. She was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee and scrolling through her phone when I walked in.
"Vivian, we need to talk about something." She glanced up. "What is it?" "It’s about the party last Friday." Her expression changed slightly. "What about it?" "I received a photograph of you and George together." She put her phone down. "Okay, and?" "And someone told me you two left together." She let out a frustrated sigh. "Barry, seriously?
