They kissed for several seconds before separating. That was when the last of my doubts disappeared. My wife had lied to me about where she was going, and she was sitting across from another man, kissing him in public as though there was nothing to hide. I felt anger rising, but I kept it under control. I had no intention of walking across the street and making a scene in front of strangers.

I wanted to know who this man was and where they were going. They remained at the table for another 10 minutes. Brittany seemed relaxed and the two of them continued talking. At one point, the man placed his hand on her knee beneath the table. She looked down briefly, smiled, and covered his hand with hers.

Eventually, they paid the bill and left. I watched them walk toward a dark colored sedan parked a short distance away. The man opened the passenger door, and Brittany climbed inside without hesitation. He walked around the front of the car and got behind the wheel. I quickly pulled out my phone and took a photograph of the vehicle's license plate.

Then I stepped toward the street and flagged down a passing taxi. As soon as I got inside, I pointed toward the sedan, which was just pulling away. Could you follow that car? I asked the driver. Just keep a little distance.

The driver nodded and we pulled into traffic behind them. For the next 15 minutes, I sat in the back seat watching the car ahead of us. I kept thinking about Brittany’s expression when she had kissed that man. There had been no hesitation, no surprise, and certainly no sign that she was being forced into anything. She had wanted to be there.

Eventually, the sedan turned into the entrance of a hotel on the outskirts of downtown. The driver slowed down as the car approached the main entrance. I leaned forward slightly. "Pull over here, please," I said. The taxi stopped across the street, giving me a clear view of the entrance.

I watched the man get out, walk around the car, and opened Brittany’s door. She stepped out, adjusted her dress, and followed him inside. I paid the driver, and got out. Whatever explanation Brittany had planned to give me, I was about to find out how much of it was a lie. I stood across the street for a moment, watching the hotel entrance.

Part of me wanted to walk inside immediately, but I knew that rushing in without thinking wouldn't help me. I needed to see exactly what was happening before I confronted Brittany. I crossed the street and entered the hotel a minute later. The lobby was quiet with a few people sitting near the reception desk. I saw Brittany and the man standing by the elevators.

They were talking quietly, completely unaware that I had followed them. A moment later, the elevator doors opened and they stepped inside. I stayed near the reception desk and watched as the doors closed. A few seconds later, I noticed the floor indicator stop on the seventh floor. I waited until another elevator arrived, then stepped inside and pressed the button for the seventh floor.

When the doors opened, I looked down the hallway and spotted them walking toward the rooms. I kept several feet between us as I followed. They stopped near the end of the corridor. The man took a key card from his pocket, unlocked a room, and stepped inside. Brittany followed him, and the door closed behind them.

I stood there staring at the number beside the door. For several seconds, I couldn't move. I had seen enough to know what was happening, but there was still something almost unbelievable about standing outside a hotel room while my wife was inside with another man. I checked the time on my phone and waited. I wasn't going to knock immediately.

I wanted to give them enough time to settle in, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't walking into another misunderstanding. But after nearly 20 minutes, I decided I had waited long enough. I walked down the hallway and stopped outside their room. Then I knocked. "Room service." There was a brief silence.

I heard movement inside followed by footsteps approaching the door. A moment later, the lock clicked and the door opened. Brittany stood in front of me wearing a hotel robe. Her hair was slightly messy and her expression changed the instant she recognized my face. She froze.

For a few seconds, neither of us said anything. Then she whispered, "Theodore." I looked past her. The man was standing near the bed, wearing trousers, but no shirt. His expression changed when he saw me. I looked back at Brittany.

"Is this what you meant by girls’ night?" She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. "Wait," she finally said. "I can explain." I let out a short laugh. "Explain what? That you came here with another man?

That you kissed him outside a restaurant? Or that you lied to my face before leaving our house?" The man stepped closer. "Listen, I don’t know what’s going on between you two, but maybe we should all calm down." I turned toward him. "This is between me and my wife. Stay out of it." He raised his hands slightly but didn't say anything else.

Brittany stepped into the hallway and pulled the door almost shut behind her. "Theodore, please. Not here." "Not here?" I repeated. You didn't seem concerned about where you were when you checked into this hotel with him. Her eyes began filling with tears.

It wasn't supposed to happen like this. I stared at her. How was it supposed to happen, Brittany? Were you planning to come home later and pretend you had spent the evening with your friends? She looked down.

I had expected anger, maybe even another argument. Instead, she seemed unable to find a single convincing thing to say. "How long?" I asked. "It's complicated." "No, it isn't." "How long have you been seeing him?" she shook her head. "Please, let's go somewhere and talk.

We'll talk later. There's nothing left to discuss tonight." I took one final look at her. Don't expect me to come home and pretend this never happened. Our marriage is over. She reached for my arm, but I stepped away.

"Let me talk to you," she said. I didn't answer. Instead, I pulled out my phone and took a photograph of Brittany and Mason standing in the hotel doorway. I wanted to have proof of what I had found in case she later tried to deny it. Then I turned around and walked toward the elevator.

Behind me, I heard her calling my name, but I kept walking. By the time I reached the lobby, I had already made my decision. I wasn't going to argue with her all night, and I wasn't going to wait for another explanation. I was going to end the marriage. I walked outside and flagged down a taxi to take me back to where I had left my car.

Once I got there, I paid the driver, got behind the wheel, and drove home. The entire drive, I kept replaying what I had just witnessed. Brittany had looked me in the eyes that afternoon and accused me of being controlling because I had questioned her frequent nights out. A few hours later, I had found her in a hotel room with another man. The hypocrisy was almost as insulting as the affair itself.

When I arrived, I went upstairs and started collecting a few things I needed for the next day. I wasn't planning to leave the house immediately, but I also wasn't going to pretend that everything was normal. I took photographs of the belongings I had purchased, made copies of important financial documents, and wrote down the details of what had happened while they were still fresh in my mind. I also saved the photograph of the other man's license plate. I didn't know his name yet, and I wasn't interested in chasing him around town.
