I walked toward the bedroom door.

Behind me she said, “I love you.”

I stopped.

For eight years, those words had meant safety.

That afternoon, they sounded like something I was being asked to believe over everything I had watched her do.

“I know you believe that.”

Then I left.

For two days, Rachel respected my request.

On Wednesday morning, she sent a long message.

No excuses. I humiliated you before anything happened in that bedroom. I knew sitting there bothered you, and instead of stopping, I made your feelings into the problem because admitting you were right would have forced me to admit I liked Cole’s attention. I am sorry.

I read the message twice.

I did not answer.

Friday afternoon brought another.

Cole and I are not together. I asked my manager to move me off projects with him, and I told him not to contact me personally.

I deleted that message.

Not because I doubted it.

Because Cole’s relationship status no longer had much to do with mine.

The following Monday, Rachel asked whether I would meet her at a coffee shop.

I agreed.

Neutral territory felt safer.

No shared couch.

No bedroom.

No apartment full of memories waiting to influence the conversation.

Rachel arrived before me.

She looked exhausted but more composed.

We sat across from each other for almost a minute before either of us spoke.

“Thank you for coming,” she said.

I nodded.

“I started therapy.”

I had not asked.

She noticed.

“I’m not saying that because I think therapy earns me anything.”

“Okay.”

“I need to understand why I did what I did.”

I looked through the window.

“And?”

Rachel folded her hands.

“I liked his attention.”

That sounded more honest than anything she had told me inside the apartment.

She continued.

“Cole flirted with me at work.”

“Did you know he was flirting?”

“Yes.”

“Did you flirt back?”

Rachel swallowed.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

At least it arrived without decoration.

“How long?”

“A few months.”

There it was.

Not an admission of a months-long physical affair.

But definitely not nothing.

Rachel wiped beneath one eye.

“We never kissed before game night.”

I studied her face.

She looked directly at me.

“I swear.”

Part of me believed her.

That did not mean trust had returned.

“Why invite him to our apartment?”

She looked away.

“I wanted him there.”

“Why?”

“Because I liked the way I felt around him.”

“How?”

“Interesting.”

She hesitated.

“Attractive.”

Another breath.

“Wanted.”

I sat back.

She began crying.
