My wife of eleven years.

And Cole Hartman.

In our bed.

Chapter 10: D-Day

Melissa screamed and grabbed the blanket.

Cole reacted differently.

He stood and moved toward me.

Angry.

Defensive.

Trying to transform himself from the man caught sleeping with another man’s wife into the most dominant man in the room.

“Get out, buddy.”

That word again.

Buddy.

I held up the phone.

“This is my house.”

He kept coming.

I shoved him backward hard enough to stop his advance and told him once:

“Get dressed and get out.”

He started shouting.

I shouted louder.

Not because I was proud.

Because something inside me had finally snapped after a year of being told I was imagining everything.

My father and brother reached the hallway.

Luis was nearby too.

That changed Cole’s calculation.

He dressed quickly.

I threw the rest of his clothes toward him and watched him leave.

Then I closed the door.

Melissa remained in the bedroom.

I stood in the living room shaking.

Not with rage anymore.

With grief.

I sent the video to my lawyer.

His answer came quickly.

I’m sorry. This is the evidence we needed. Do not share it with anyone else.

Melissa eventually walked into the living room fully dressed.

She could not look at me.

I started recording audio.

“Why?”

She cried.

No answer.

“Did I treat you badly?”

She shook her head.

“Do you love him?”

Another head shake.

I slammed my palm against the table.

“Then say something.”

Melissa jumped.

I had almost never raised my voice at her.

The fear in her expression brought me back down immediately.

I sat.

“I have never hurt you.”

“I know.”

“I’m not going to start now.”

She finally spoke.

“We can fix this.”

I stared at her.

“Fix what?”

“Our marriage.”

I shook my head.

“Our marriage ended before tonight.”

“Nathan—”

“No.”

I looked directly at her.

“This wasn’t a mistake.”

“It was.”

“No.”

“A mistake is taking the wrong exit.”

“You lied for months.”

“You made codes.”

“You hid your location.”

“You brought him into our home.”

I paused.

“You made choices.”

She covered her face.

“My lawyer will contact you.”

Melissa looked up.

“You already have a lawyer?”

“Yes.”

That was when she understood.

This was not going to become an argument followed by reconciliation sex and two months of counseling.

I was leaving.

For real.

Chapter 11: The Sound of a Suitcase

I told Melissa to stay with her sister.

Her older sister, Rebecca, lived about forty minutes away and had two children we both adored.

Melissa nodded.

She went to the bedroom and began packing.

I followed at first because I did not trust my own mind enough to leave her alone with documents, valuables, or anything connected to finances.

Then watching her pack became unbearable.

She folded clothes exactly the way she always did.

Smoothed each shirt.

Matched socks.

Placed shoes along the edge.

Tiny movements I had watched for eleven years.

The same woman.

The same hands.

And somehow not the same person at all.

I went into the spare room.
