Her own voice filled the kitchen.

I heard myself ask whether she intended to return to the marriage.

Then Melissa saying she did not know whether there was enough left to return to.

My warning followed.

Then her laugh.

You’re bluffing.

Then the sentence.

There isn’t enough left here for me to stay.

Melissa closed her eyes.

I stopped the recording.

She covered her face.

“I’m sorry.”

I waited.

“I don’t even remember saying it like that.”

“You meant it when you said it.”

“I was angry.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted you to react.”

That caught my attention.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I think part of me wanted you to block the door or beg me not to go.”

I stared.

“You wanted proof.”

“Yes.”

“While leaving with Derek.”

Her face collapsed.

“I know how insane that sounds.”

It sounded sad more than insane.

Melissa had created a test in which my dignity became evidence that I did not love her enough.

If I begged, I cared.

If I respected her choice, I did not.

That game had no outcome where I remained whole.

“I’m not playing that anymore.”

Melissa nodded.

Then she asked, “Can we try counseling?”

“I already scheduled therapy.”

Hope crossed her face.

“Together?”

“No.”

It disappeared.

“I need to understand why I stayed in something where I stopped trusting my own observations.”

She looked wounded.

I regretted the sharpness.

But I did not withdraw the truth.

The divorce took eight months.

No judge stripped Melissa of everything.

No lawyer discovered some magical clause rewarding me because my wife had been unfaithful.

There was paperwork, discovery, appraisals, account tracing, mediation, and far more email than any failed marriage deserves.
