Sports.

Money.

Then it changed.

Brandon wrote:

She’s getting harder to manage.

Grant:

Then stop asking.

Brandon:

Her brother makes her think she has backup.

Grant:

Break that.

Daniel read the screenshot twice.

His eyes went cold.

Another message:

Claire’s the real problem.

She listens.

Grant replied:

Then make Daniel suspicious of Claire. He'll handle the rest.

I had to sit down.

This was not paranoia anymore.

Not interpretation.

It was written.

Brandon had deliberately tried to destabilize my marriage because he saw me as an escape route for Melissa.

Daniel stood at the kitchen counter.

His breathing changed.

I knew that look.

“Daniel.”

He said nothing.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“This is not your fault.”

“I almost did exactly what he wanted.”

“Yes.”

He looked hurt by my honesty.

But I continued.

“For ten minutes.”

“I accused you.”

“And then you listened.”

“After accusing you.”

“Yes.”

He looked away.

I walked closer.

“He knew you loved Melissa.”

Daniel frowned.

“He used your weaknesses around that love.”

“What weakness?”

“You act before you think when somebody you love is threatened.”

He nodded slowly.

“And he knew if he made you believe I was betraying you, he could turn your attention away from her.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I almost handed him exactly what he wanted.”

“Almost.”

That word mattered.

People sometimes treated near-mistakes like they were identical to completed ones.

They were not.

Daniel had been manipulated.

But he had also stopped.

Listened.

Changed course.

Responsibility required acknowledging both.

CHAPTER 6: OUR OWN DAMAGE

Melissa’s crisis did not magically repair what happened between Daniel and me.

That surprised both of us.

Once the truth was out, we expected the accusation to disappear.

It didn't.

I still remembered his face when he held the box.

He still remembered the way I hesitated.

One night two weeks after the protective order, we sat at the same kitchen island.

No paperwork.

No medication.

No phones.

Just coffee.

Daniel said:

“I owe you another apology.”

“You’ve apologized.”

“Not correctly.”

I waited.

He looked at me.

“I decided what you had done before you got to explain.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I saw one thing and started building a case.”

“Yes.”

“Late gym nights.”

“Yes.”

“Changed password.”

“Yes.”

“Calls outside.”

“Yes.”

He sighed.

“I turned our marriage into an investigation.”

That sentence hurt because it was accurate.

I wrapped both hands around my mug.

“If I found emergency contraception in your bag, I don’t know what I would’ve thought.”

“That doesn't make what I did okay.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Then I took a breath.

“I owe you something too.”
